Jägermeister (literally hunt master) is a German herbal liqueur invented in 1934 by Curt Mast, an avid hunter. Today, it is made by Mast-Jägermeister in the town of Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony.
Jägermeister is a blend of 56 herbs and spices, including citrus, licorice, anise, poppy seeds, saffron, ginger, juniper, and ginseng. Contrary to some reports, there is no animal blood in Jägermeister. The herbs and spices are macerated in alcohol and water, then aged in oak barrels for a year.
Jägermeister is brown colored through the addition of caramel. It has a strong, herbal/medicinal aroma and warming, herbal flavor that is somewhat cut by sweetness. It is 70 proof.
