Underberg is a digestive [ingredient=amaro amaro] made in Germany by the fifth generation family owned Underberg company. Underberg was invented in 1846 by Hubert Underberg-Albrecht after years of development. Underberg is a secret blend of herbs and spices from 43 countries distilled seperately, then aged in Slavonian oak barrels.

Production of Underberg was stopped during the second World War due to shortages of raw materials. Once production resumed, Emil Underberg, the grandson of Hubert, decided to bottle Underberg in distinctive 20 ml bottles, which ensured freshness and dosed out the correct amount of Underberg. Underberg is also famous for their distinctive caps, which collectors can turn in for Underberg gifts.

Underberg is dark brown and clear. It smells of licorice root, green herbs, and peppery spices. It is moderately bitter, with a long, warming alcohol finish.
