1 1⁄2 oz Cognac (Wondrich recommends Pierre Ferrand Ambre or Hine Rare)
1 1⁄2 oz White port
1 t Maraschino Liqueur (or grenadine; see history)
1 twst Lemon peel (as garnish)

History

The original recipe, printed in Newman's book American Bar in 1900, called for grenadine, but an amendment in 1904 changed that to Maraschino liqueur.
