3⁄4 oz Gin
3⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
Instructions

Shake, strain, straight up, cocktail glass

Notes

Some prefer a bit more Gin. Herbal and funky, initially sweet, then sour. Very balanced. If made with Genever, it's a Latest Word.

History

Robert Hess (Drink Boy) suggest 1/2 oz each. I've scaled this up a bit to a 3 oz cocktail.

  • Alternative to La Lumiere which substitutes St. Germain instead of Luxardo
  • sub out gin for mezcal
  • Gin- sweet, sour
  • 1oz brokers
  • I used key lime juice, which added a nice tanginess.
  • Excellent sour. I can imagine an absinthe rinse, or Peychaud's.
  • Did 1oz gin and 1/2oz all others for preferred balance Used Antidote Gin- so good!
  • Made with 1oz gin (Beefeater). This is a terrific drink.
  • I prefer this with the gin doubled to 1 1/2 oz and the other ingredients reduced to 1/2 oz. Drops from a 4 to a 3 with equal parts.
  • Use 1 oz gin for a slightly dryer version. Stefan loved it. — ★★★★★

I can't find the Green chartreuse anywhere, and have never had it with the Chartreuse. I was s told that La Galoise was a good substitute. I did enjoy the ones I made with that. Was wondering what others would recommend in lieu of the green chartreuse

I haven't tried La Gauloise yet, but see it is finally available in the U.S. I couldn't get it a few years ago when I was collecting ingredients called for in the 1929 l'heure du Cocktail book. 11 cocktails include Gauloise while 15 include Chartreuse, and 27 include Izarra.

I haven't tasted anything that quite matches green Chartreuse, although Izarra green comes closest. Izarra has more mint and is missing some "je ne sais quoi" aspect of the Chartreuse. Boomsma has a considerably milder and sweeter profile. Genepy's profile is too narrow; the centerbes are more vegetal herbal; Elicsir Combier is considerably different.
