A Spontaneous Libation for your Consideration

Ada Lovecraft

1 1⁄2 oz Herbal liqueur, Jeppson's Malort
1 1⁄2 oz Sweet vermouth
1⁄8 oz Fernet Branca
1 twst Orange peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a coupe, and garnish with an orange twist.

History

After making the Hocus Pocus that was a riff on the Hanky Panky, I began to contemplate other things that began with H & P. My mind soon drifted to the initials of the New England cosmic horror author H.P. Lovecraft, and that led me to Malört as the base spirit to represent the supernatural horror aspect. I dubbed this one the Ada Lovecraft as a nod to Ada Coleman who created the Hanky Panky at the Savoy Hotel bar.

The Margarita, or An Earthy Mystery

Americans drink a lot of Margaritas. While the Margarita makes up eighteen percent of the mixed drinks ordered in the United States, tequila represents only six percent of the domestic spirits market. Unfortunately, we drink a lot of bad Margaritas too. Neon colored, super-sweet, artificially flavored, poorly made, cheap ingredient, frozen-slushy Margaritas surely account for most of those eighteen percent.

Perhaps one reason that Americans drink a lot of bad Margaritas is that we seem to have no idea of its origin. There are theories (among others) that Dallas socialites, Peggy Lee, Mexican (or Irish, or Texan) bartenders, German ambassador’s daughters or Ziegfeld Follies dancers all have a hand in the drink.

    Oops. Fixed. I was trying to transcribe from memory and I failed (slightly). The 1 oz instead of 3/4 oz would still work but will end your evening quicker.
