A Spontaneous Libation for your Consideration

1 1⁄2 oz Virgin Islands Rum, Cruzan Blackstrap
1 oz Lemon juice
1⁄2 oz Falernum (dark)
1⁄4 oz Passion fruit syrup, B.G. Reynolds
1 ds Aphrodite bitters, Dr Adam Elmegirab’s Aphrodite Bitters
4 dr Jamaican #1 bitters, Bittercube
Instructions

Shake til frosted with plenty of fresh ice, then dump unstrained into a chilled rocks glass. Optionally, express and discard a lemon peel. Add two or three more drops of Jamaican #1 bitters for aromatics.

Notes

A dark and spicy sour with glints of tropical fruit, balanced to a little shy of Tiki sweetness. For a stronger, drier, less molasses-intensive drink, substitute half (or more) of the Black Strap with Lemon Hart 151.

Falernum syrup: make Rick from Kaiser Penguin's rich falernum (here: http://www.kaiserpenguin.com/remixed-astro-aku-aku/ ), but add 1T of medium-roast coffee beans and .5T of pecans and toast them with the other spices. Any homemade should be a fine substitution, as should commercial syrups (e.g. B. G. Reynolds). If using Velvet Falernum, substitute half with allspice dram.

The Flight of the Negroni

The Negroni is indomitable. Attack it with skewed ratios, and it rallies. Violate the ingredients, and it stubbornly persists. I can’t think of another drink that you can screw up so thoroughly and still enjoy the result.

This history of the Negroni is disputed, but probably dates to 1919, where the Americano was stiffened by substituting gin for the soda water. Regardless of exactly who created the drink and when, the Negroni is the King of bitter cocktails. If you spy a bottle of Campari on the backbar, the bartender probably knows how to make a Negroni.

    Very important to keep an eye on the "Reposado". . .I used a Blanco, and it was not the best choice. A slightly softer Tequila would have been a better move on my part.
