A Spontaneous Libation for your Consideration

Orchard Street

Created and posted by yarm.
2 oz Apple brandy, Lairds Bonded (Calvados would work too)
1⁄2 oz Amaro Nardini
1⁄4 oz Oloroso sherry (Or Amontillado)
1 twst Lemon peel (As garnish)

Stir with ice, strain into a coupe glass, and garnish with a lemon twist.

After having Death & Co. Denver's Five Points, I began to think about its similarities to the Carroll Gardens -- both maintained the combination of Punt e Mes and Amaro Nardini but had different base spirits and nutty accents. To make my own riff, I swapped the spirit to aged apple brandy, and for a nutty ingredient instead of Maraschino or walnut liqueur, I opted for an oxidized dry sherry. As I learned from the It's a Long, Long Way at Wit's End, a little bit of that sort of sherry goes quite a ways. The apple element made me think of Orchard Street in the Lower East Side in Manhattan that is less than a mile away from the Five Points neighborhood.

Murray Stenson needs our help

Murray Stenson, Seattle's well-known and highly-regarded bartender (Zig Zag Café, Canon, 2010 "American Bartender of the Year") has a heart condition that will require an expensive surgery to allow him to return to work. Like many bartenders, he lacks health insurance. While we have not had the pleasure of visiting Murray in Seattle, we have certainly enjoyed some of his recipes and have heard tales of his hospitality.

Haters will be upset but it's just as good with lime.

This seems pretty similar to the Applejack Rabbit, circa 1930s. I believe it was included on one of PDT's early fall menus (which is where I first had it).

I dialed back the Campari for my husband, who is not a huge fan, and amped up each vermouth a bit so that there were equal parts Campari- dry-sweet. Still a strong Campari presence, but more pleasing to my particular crowd.

Made this with Spring 44 Mountain Gin and Dolin Rouge. Very nice! Takes me to the mountains.
