History

This is a bit of a play on an improved whiskey cocktail, with a little extra jazz.

“The potion is a rich honey color and swirls lazily around, regardless of how it's handled. It can be found in any sort of vessel, though it is usually found in glass jars. The eye of a shapeshifter drifts along the potion's bottom, making it a daunting beverage for the average taverngoer to order. It has an extremely strong alcoholic taste with a hint of caramel. Due to its magical nature, the alcohol within this potion affects a creature twice as much as the alcohol within a nonmagical beverage.” -The Griffons Saddlebag

I see why this has 5 stars! Perfectly integrated and refreshing but with depth.

Kindred Cocktails member joshlh has contributed his own special calls for this one, referring to it as "Maturin", using Gin Mare, Manzanilla sherry, Regan's orange bitters, with 4 drops of saline, and lemon twist.

I am going to curate this to correct the reference and year. Harry Johnson's Bartender Manual didn't have 267 pages until 1900 revised edition, so the 1882 year is wrong, and this is from the 1900 edition. This makes sense with Wondrich's 2007 statement about the Tuxedo Club (est. 1886) being the origin of the cocktail, and to a different spec. I will also change for format for noting extra dashes.

    Nice but little too sweet.

Delicious "Fall flavors" drink, with a very clean and well-balanced note of lemon. It has been re-named, likely for obvious reasons, as Le Moustache on the cocktail list at the Walrus & the Carpenter, where it was created. Cheers!
