1⁄2 oz Mezcal
1⁄2 oz Jamaican rum (Smith & Cross or at least funky, i.e.: not Appleton)
1 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano (Lillet Blanc is a good choice too.)
1⁄2 oz Campari
1⁄2 oz Bénédictine
1 twst Orange peel (as garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with an orange twist.

Notes

Orange, smoke, and citrus aromas. Orange and peach notes on the sip. Vegetal agave, funky rum, bitter orange, herbal, and smoke flavors on the swallow.

History

A Negroni riff created after thinking about the limited bottles at a bar I was doing a trial shift at; the drink remains, but I never took the position. Named after a William S. Burroughs cut-up style novel.

Amari & bitter friends: an update

Prior to The Great Site Update of Christmas 2014, we published a list of amari hidden under a link on the recommended brands page. We have put some time and thought into our bitter friends, and have split the list into our top dozen or so recommendations, plus a list of other amari that are available.

Some amari are easy to find; others ... not so much. There are hundreds of amari that aren't even imported to the US. Look for amari at larger liquor stores, or specialty stores in the Italian section of your city.

    Laphroaig rinse, 15 ml Pierre Ferrand Cognac, 25 ml ruby red grapefruit juice, 60 ml Cocchi Americano, with a short shake. Really fantastic low-ABV sipper that has enough complexity to stand up by your friends drinking Martinis and Manhattans. Lasting gentian bitterness, but a measured sweetness up front.
