1 rinse Absinthe, Vieux Pontarlier Verte
2 oz Bourbon, Old Grand Dad 100 (You want high rye and dry here. Wild Turkey 101 works ok)
1⁄4 oz Averna
1⁄2 oz Sweet vermouth, Carpano Antica Formula (I also enjoy Punt E Mes for a heavier variation.)
1 bsp Root liqueur, Art in the Age
3 ds Orange bitters, Regans' orange bitters (Try other orange bitters, or better yet a blend for complexity)
Instructions

Rinse cocktail glass with absinthe and chill in the freezer, stir the remaining ingredients over ice until chilled. Strain into chilled and rinsed cocktail glass.OPTIONAL: spray a dash of absinthe onto the drink with an atomizer to confuse the drinker as to what they are about to taste (stupify) as well as add a bit more herbaceous notes to the flavor profile

History

I created this drink for my wife who, albeit 10 years late, developed a love for the Harry Potter books and films recently. I just basically wanted a darker drink with some herbaceous "elixir" like flavors to invoke the fantasy theme. I love Virgils root beer and had been itching to create a manhattan-esque drink around its wintergreen heavy flavor profile. Higher proof Grand Dad bourbon to me is under appreciated and i wanted to work with its complex orange-ey high rye flavored profile. I had originally used some Heaven Hill juice (EC 12) but it was
