Bombay Afternoon

2 oz Gin
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
3 oz Club soda
Instructions

Shake gin, ginger syrup, lemon juice, and bitters with ice. Pour into tall glass and top with club soda.

Notes

Or omit the ginger syrup and use ginger beer rather than club soda.

I built in a glass tumbler, using Citadelle gin, Q ginger beer in place of the ginger syrup & club soda, with Scrappy's cardamom bitters. Next time, I might work fennel into it for a more vivid Indian experience.


Fenway Sling

1 1⁄2 oz Gold rum, Ragged Mountain (Use any Barbados-style rum you like. Using Brugal gold might please Big Papi.)
3⁄4 oz Cherry shrub (Homemade, and red for the Sox)
1⁄2 oz Bénédictine
1 ds Bitters, Bittermens Burlesque (Change up to other fruit- or spice-based bitters ad lib. or per pitcher sign)
Instructions

Build over ice in highball, toss into mixing glass and back to combine, top with seltzer, give brief stir.

Notes

Varies from Baker's canonical Singapore Sling by using tart cherry shrub instead of cherry cordial and lime, though a lime wedge squeezed and pitched in like Lester would be a nice addition. Named for my 'hood in Boston, and appropriately red.

Silvered Mirror

1 1⁄2 oz Gin, Hendrick's
1⁄2 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse

Instructions

In a shaker, add first five ingredients over ice and shake. Strain into glass, drip absinthe into cocktail so that it louches.

Notes

Sorry about the impossible to find bitters - I made them, and they're pretty good for a first try, and yes, they taste like forest floor. Boker's is a fair substitute, but it has more coffee aroma and flavor.

Oaxacan Ice Water

1 1⁄2 oz Mezcal
1⁄2 oz Agave syrup
Instructions

Combine ingredients with ice, except soda water, and shake hard. Strain into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass and top with a splash of soda water. Garnish with lemon wheel dusted in chili salt (optional).

"How High the Moon" Manhattan

Instructions

Combine in mixing glass over ice, stir for 30 secs, strain into coupe.

Notes

Homemade using base of 16 oz each demarara sugar, rice vinegar & cider vinegar.

Nice showcase for the Bulleit, which is wonderfully green and grassy for a rye. The cherry shrub gives sharp top notes along with cherry umami to moderate the bitter Punt e Mes.

Did your Dad ever add juice from the the jar of "maraschino" cherries to his manhattan? This cocktail mimics that but in a much more satisfactory way. If this drink evokes anything, perhaps it would be the guileless cocktail culture of the 50's when my Dad learned to mix drinks.

History

As this was being fused into being à la minute 6/25/11, "How High the Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford came onto the iPod. To me it was a happy coincidence.
