You're a Fine Girl

1 1⁄2 oz Red wine
3⁄4 oz Brandy
3⁄4 oz Rye (high proof)
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
1⁄2 oz Orange juice
1⁄4 oz Falernum
1⁄4 oz Orgeat
1⁄4 oz Maple syrup
1 pn Nutmeg (freshly grated, for garnish)
1 sli Lemon (wheel, for garnish)
2 lf Pineapple (for garnish)
Instructions

Whip shake with a handful of crushed/pebble ice and dump into a chilled snifter. Fill with crushed/pebble ice. Garnish with grated nutmeg, a lemon wheel, and pineapple fronds and serve with a straw.

Notes

"They say, 'Brandy, fetch another round.'
She serves them whiskey and wine."

History

I had the kind of dumb idea to make a tiki drink inspired by "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass. I am not aware of another tiki drink that has red wine as the main ingredient, but it works surprisingly well. With its emphasis on red wine, citrus, and spice, the drink almost tastes like a tropical mulled wine.

  • Works well. Was out of OJ, used 1/4 triple sec instead. Makes me want to play around with the template, different spirits. Would lean more into the spice—maybe additional bitters, falernum, or 1/4 oz allspice dram, drop the Orgeat if needed to balance.

  • Pretty easy recipe that doesn’t get enough mentions - I switch the volume of Punt E Mes and Campari around, add Angostura bitters, use the rye / cherry / coffee liqueurs I have on hand and omit the grapefruit twist.

It is so weird that they would publish this with no attribution. I can't find any elsewhere and there isn't even a single author on the article (I've seen authors post their original and not list who created it).

Yuletide

1⁄2 oz Cinnamon syrup (semi-rich)
1 rinse Allspice Dram, St Elizabeth
1 twst Orange peel
Instructions

Rinse old-fashioned glass with allspice dram and add remaining liquid ingredients. Add ice and stir until chilled. Express orange swath and garnish.

Notes

Aiming for a "Christmas-in-a-glass" old-fashioned variation that would work as written, but also accommodate all of my Wisconsin friends' inclinations to add club soda (or lemon-lime soda) to their old fashioneds...

History

I was hosting a holiday party and wanted to recapture something of an old-fashioned recipe that I made several years ago using a friend's homemade apple butter.

Bennett Park

2 oz Bourbon
1 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
1 twst Orange peel
Instructions

Combine ingredients into a mixing glass and stir with ice to chill. Strain into a chilled coupe. Express orange peel over cocktail and lay across far edge of coupe.

Notes

This is a holiday-appropriate Manhattan variation. Nux Alpina makes all the difference vs. most walnut liqueurs. Also, Cocchi di Torino works, while – because of the cherry sweetness – Carpano Antica does not.

I prefer this cocktail with a bonded bourbon (I use Old Grand-Dad), but any high-rye mash bill bourbon will stand up to the sweetness of the liqueur and vermouth.

History

I was planning a holiday party and happened to pick up some Nux Alpina after it became available locally. This Manhattan variation is similar to Haus Alpenz's (maker of Nux Alpina) "Black Manhattan" but (1) that name is already taken, of course, and (2) this recipe uses bourbon, instead of rye.

Bennett Park is the highest point on the island of Manhattan, which I think means that it's as close to "alpine" as Manhattan gets.

Blue BMW

1 1⁄2 oz Cognac
3⁄4 oz Amaro (Pergote' Amaro d' Erbe)
3⁄4 oz Half-and-half
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a frozen coupe glass.

Notes

1. Amazingly, the color is a dark green.
2. Use of heavy whipping cream, as a substitute for half & half, adds lots of "rich."
