Piglet's Lament

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Notes

Elderflower works great with both Cynar and Campari, and the grapefruit oil helps to draw the fruitier notes of it out.

History

I was tinkering around with Negroni variations for a request from an upcoming wedding held at Loyal Nine. I was inspired by Eeyore's Requiem to include other liqueurs in the mix, but I did not want it to be as extreme as Toby Maloney's neo-classic with Campari being the largest component. Therefore, I stuck with the equal parts gin, liqueur, and vermouth ratio. For a name, I kept the Winnie the Pooh theme and decided on Piglet's Lament; one of Piglet's laments in Winnie the Pooh is "It is hard to be brave when you're only a Very Small Animal."

WOW WOW WOW !!! This is quite fantastic !! My own "addition" is that the fresh grapefruit I have: the rind/skin is very thin and won't spritz. So I cut a big piece of rind, then squooshed it and smooshed it a lot, then rubbed the inside of my coupe glass with that rind to get some "spritz" into the glass for the garnish.
Anyway, this is a fantastic cocktail !!!!

Negroni Grog

1 oz Gin
1 oz Sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari
3⁄4 oz Grapefruit juice
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
3⁄4 oz Honey syrup (1:1)
1⁄4 oz Allspice Dram
1 oz Soda water (Not included in the shake)
Instructions

Shake all but the soda with ice, strain into a tall glass with 1 oz soda water, fill with crushed ice, and garnish with an orange wheel, cherry, lime twist flag. A double old fashioned glass with a Navy Grog ice cone would work well too!

History

A three-way cross between a Negroni and both Don the Beachcomber's and Trader Vic's Navy Grogs. Campari goes well with grapefruit and allspice flavors, so I knew it was going to be a win. Since the bar had a gin theme, I figured that my tropical drinks needed to eschew rum for a bit.

History

At Our Fathers, I crafted this three gin riff on the Vieux Carré with dry gin, sloe gin, and Genever akin to Martin Cate's The Modern Prometheus tiki drink. Here, the sloe gin was subbing in for the 1930s classic's sweet vermouth. For a name, I was inspired by the old cheer "Hip hip hooray!" to call this one the Gin Gin Carré!

  • Interested to try this out as intended. Had to sub in Green Chartreuse because I was out of Benedictine. Jammy, with the genever coming through well. Chartreuse is much more prominent than Benedictine would be.

Notes

Any good Rye will do, I like Breakout as a relatively inexpensive well done whiskey. Bourbon could be substituted but I like the spiciness of the rye. Other Amaros will do, and change the character a bit. Use 1/4 - 1/2 oz Lavender syrup to desired sweetnes.

Created and named upon the birth of my lovely daughter Lyra. After a week or so, I then created a variation called "The Screaming Lyra" ....

The Screaming Lyra

Instructions

2020 Visions

1 1⁄4 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Orange liqueur, Grand Marnier
3⁄4 oz Grenadine (see note)
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing tin and shake with a small amount of crushed ice.
Pour into a double Old-Fashioned glass and top with more crushed ice.
Garnish with a fresh mint bouquet, freshly grated cinnamon and nutmeg.

Notes

Navy Strength Grenadine:
32 ounces POM Wonderful pomegranate juice
2 star anise pods
1 cinnamon stick
4 cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 ounces pomegranate molasses
3 cups white sugar
3/4 cup Demerara sugar
4 tablespoons muscovado sugar

Combine all ingredients except for the sugars in a saucepan and heat for 20 minutes over medium heat. Add sugars and stir to combine. Strain into a sealable bottle or container and keep refrigerated for up to a month.

  • I really like this - the combination of the Cynar 70 and the Mezcal give it a certain amount of funkiness. And the Maraschino is a perfect counter to sweeten it just enough. Very interestintg. After tasting, I also added a couple saline drops.
