Saidoka

1 1⁄2 oz Cognac
1⁄2 oz Orgeat
1⁄2 oz Curaçao
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
1 twst Lemon peel (As garnish)
1 part Sugar (For rimming the glass)
Instructions

Shake with ice, strain into a sugar-rimmed cocktail coupe, and garnish with a lemon twist.

History

I pondered the orgeat-curaçao duo in the classic Mai Tai, and this combination led me to make a mashup drink. For a base spirit, I considered Cognac, and the 1862 orgeat and bitters Japanese Cocktail came to mind for the former ingredient, and curaçao and lemon Sidecar sprung into my head for the latter. For a name, I dubbed this one the Saidoka as the Japanese word for the motorcycle accessory.

  • Very good. A full half ounce of Islay sounded a bit much for a float; a barspoonful is fine.
  • 1/2 Chartreuse and 3/4 Nonino. Loved the balance with the smoke from the Islay. May try again using Yellow Chartreuse.
  • I preferred the modified version without the Scotch float. — ★★★
  • Swap the proportions for the Chartreuse and Nonino, and try it without the scotch float.
  • Found myself eager to get through the float to the other flavors.

This has a lot in common with Sother Teague's C.I.A. I really enjoyed it tonight. I agree with the other comment, and I think I would swap the proportions of the Chartreuse and the Nonino, and I'm not sure the Islay float is doing enough. Even so, this is definitely going onto my list.

Notes

Existential question--can something be a Last Word riff if it's not equal parts? Can't answer that one, but these ratios work better than equal parts.

History

Been experimenting with using Ancho Reyes (both variants) as a base spirit

Meh, "equal parts" cocktails are rarely best with actually-equal parts, IMO. e.g.: the best Last Word and Negroni recipes I've ever tried aren't equal parts.

Deliciousness always beats purity, and this one is delicious!

Proportions just right! I personally would lessen the Luxardo just because I like it less sweet.

  • Made with homemade cordial that was probably too light on the elderflower. The result mostly tasted like tart Champagne. Solid, but nothing special. I guess this would be at least a 4 made with a more elderflower-y cordial.

Some background history is here. Elderflower cordial is quite different than liqueur but has historically been widely available in the UK. It's also apparently available in Ikea.

If your area has access to the wines of Selbach-Oster, Skurnik also imports the Nikolaihof lineup which includes a stunning elderflower cordial. Thanks,  Zachary
