bkemp1984 commented on 5/31/2022:

Made with Kammer Kirsch and Leopold Bros Maraschino, with a pitted sour cherry I had just picked in the yard. Very good stuff. I don't mind the dryness but I'd add at least a splash of simple next time for a slight bit of balance. Lovers of cherry flavors will like this.

EDIT: Couple months later made this as a frozen drink after getting a Vitamix. Added a good bit of simple (didn't measure) and it was good, but still needed additional sugar more than the regular cocktail needed any sugar. Either way, having fruit juice and simple means it blends very well into a frozen cocktail.

  • I agree it's a bit sweet, but the flavor profile is promising. I added some lemon (3/4 oz) and egg white (3/4 oz), and a touch (1/4 oz) of Licor 43 to make it into a "creamsicle" sour. This brought it up to 4 stars.
  • A bit too sweet. Maybe adding another ingredient that adds a slight bitterness would improve this. — ★★★★

Hi Falutin

1 1⁄2 oz Bourbon
1 oz Byrrh
Instructions

Add ingredients to a mixing glass and stir with ice. Pour into a chilled coupe.

Notes

In the style of a light Manhattan with Tiki elements, the Swedish Punsch provides banana notes, with the Byrrh providing a slight bitterness balanced by the sweetness of Bourbon and Punsch.

Pinball Racket

1 1⁄2 oz Rye
1⁄2 oz Mezcal
1⁄2 oz Campari
1⁄2 oz Cynar
1 Cherry (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with a cherry.

Notes

A few people wrote down the first iteration of this recipe before I changed it on Instagram a day later, and they rather enjoy it. So I figured that I would include my first experiment. I am much happier with the second / the Cynar version of the Pinball Racket though, but your mileage may vary.

The Pinball Racket (Version 1)
• 1 1/2 oz Rye Whiskey
• 1/2 oz Mezcal
• 3/4 oz Campari
• 1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur
• 2 dash Mole Bitters
Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with a cherry.

History

In early 2020, I was inspired by the rye-mezcal drink that I just had in New York City as well as others like the Racketeer (already on Kindred Cocktails). I began tinkering, and after a few iterations over the course of two nights, I picked my favorite (see the notes for the first iteration). For a name, I was inspired by the Racketeer which reminded me of something I found in my town's library's historic room: a folder on the Pinball Racket. This Winter Hill Gang ploy was to go into establishments and strong-arm offer to put a cigarette, candy, jukebox, or pinball machine in; moreover, they told the store and restaurant owners not to worry about its upkeep or finances. I learned a lot more about organized crime than I did about my intended goal, namely the rum distillery that existed in Somerville, MA, up until Prohibition.
