1⁄6 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
1⁄2 oz Simple syrup (gunpowder tea infused, see note)
2 ds Bitters, Apothecary Bitters (smokey pear bitters)
1 sli Lime (wheel, as garnish)
Instructions

Rinse a chilled coupe with the Scotch. Shake, strain, garnish.

Notes

To make the syrup, add 1/4 cup each water and sugar to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, add 1 tsp gunpowder green tea. Cover and steep until cool. Strain.

Instructions

Muddle cilantro with lime juice in a shaker. Add remaining ingredients with ice and shake until chilled. Double strain into a chilled, rimmed cocktail glass.

This is really good. I was looking for something to do with the Nixta, and this fit the bill. I substituted Mezcal for the Raicilla, and did a heaping 1/4 oz of Ancho. Still it was great! Nice and bright flavors here.


Quite tasty, using ingredients I am keen on (Ancho Reyes, cilantro). I used Sotol since I lacked Raicilla. I dropped the lime to 1/2+ oz since there is not much sweetness to balance the acidity, and my early season limes are quite tart and not that juicy yet. I think this could use 1/4 oz of simple syrup to finish it more like street corn, but otherwise it is spot on. Instructions aren't clear, so I salted the rim, although a mix of sugar and salt on the rim might be interesting...

The cilantro accentuates the corn flavor of the Nixta and the Hacienda de Chihuahua Sotol I used blended well with both. This is precisely the sort of flavor profile I was hoping for when I picked up some Nixta.


Best Nixta cocktail I've had so far, even though I subbed Mezcal for Raicilla and had to leave out the cilantro because I didn't have any. Looking forward to trying it again when I get some!


Creme de No Swizzle

1 1⁄2 oz Rhum Agricole, Barbancourt 8 (could use a darker rum, blackstrap, goslings, etc.)
1⁄2 oz Nocino (Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur)
1⁄2 oz Crème de Noyaux, Tempus Fugit
1⁄2 oz Crème de Cacao (Tuthilltown Cacao liqueur)
2 ds Bitters, Plum Bitters (Fee Bros)
1 twst Lemon peel (cut wide)
Instructions

Build from dark to light over crushed ice, adding ice between layers. Float Creme de violette last. Add bitters, express lemon swath and drop in.

Stir with ice, strain into a rocks glass with ice, and garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Mellows nicely with ice melt.

History

In scanning my liquor shelves, I conjured up an Scotch abstraction of the Bijou taken in the Caustic Negroni direction. Since Scotch goes well with amari like Sfumato in the Preceptor and Cardamaro in the Great King Street, Green Chartreuse and orange bitters would round out the combination nicely. Moreover, Bijou means jewel, so I dubbed this one the Romancing the Stone after the 1984 romantic adventure comedy.

Clever combination and with thoughtful proportions. I wasn't sure if I would like this, since Green Chartreuse is often a bully in classic cocktails; but the Sfumato, Cardamaro, and Scotch are intense enough on their own to tame the strong herbal Chartreuse. Even the Angostura Orange Bitters (from the original post) were a good match for the other components. Of course Sfumato and Cardamaro are intense, so this is something one should be in the state of mind for.

Notes

Stick to contemporary gins with this one. Avoid London dry. Plymouth, St. George Botanivore, and Barr Hill all gave me great results. Barr Hill seems to have yielded the best results.

The result is an aromatic wonderland of a punch.
