  • Made with nonino. squeeze/wedje of orange
  • Kind of bitter and complex - good with an orange squeeze - first sip was strong but liked it a lot
  • Sweet, bitter and smoky! I gave it a little squeeze of orange - even better!
  • Ron zacapa or el dorado 8/12 Bozal mezcal — ★★★★★
  • This is absolutely one of my all-time favorites on KC. I've made it at least 20 times now. Always a home run. Perfect if — like me — you're a rum fan but also gravitate toward the bitter.
  • Try
  • Strong rum notes. Very interesting and different. Maybe more orange zest could be good.
  • Made with Pyrat XO and Vida. A kind of tobacco-ey Negroni. Grew on me, as happens with mezcal.
  • Play with the rum. Tried Appleton.

Love it. Used Santa Teresa for the rum and Ramazzotti for amaro. Just what I had on hand. And that's saying something because I'm not a huge Campari fan. For my girlfriend I call this drink "Love to hate or hate to love?" because she loves Campari and amari in general but despises mezcal more than any other alcohol.

Like many drinkers, I'm not terribly fond of heavily peated drinks, but "The Departed," I found to be within my level of tolerance for peated drinks. As a result, this drink more than tolerable, but actually enjoyable. The Campari was able to assert itself over the Mezcal, and the El Dorado 15 (which I used), provided some appreciable sweetness, and the orange zest gave a nice, contrasting flavor to the drink (in hindsight, I wish I had added more orange zest than I did).

Overall, I found this drink to have many flavors that worked together to provide the drinker with a memorable drink, which I rated at 4.0. In short, "The Departed" should have a long life, and give a lot of pleasure to those who enjoy a better than average drink.

Substituted wildly: Contralto Bitter, Pyrat XO, Foro amaro, Vida, Peychaud's and a dash of Regans' Orange. Interesting patten. Needs more experimentation.

Round two, as written, but with El Dorado 15. Very nice, but dramatically improved with 1/2 oz dry vermouth. I used Dolin.

Same concept as the Black Scottish Cyclops minus what Laphroaig brings to the table.

Very tasty. The rhubarb bitters provide a combination of flavor and aroma that sets this simple recipe apart, augmenting the Ramazzotti.

Curated this. Instead of a new ingredient which is half lemon juice and half simple, I changed this to 1/4 oz lemon juice and 1/4 oz simple. Primae facie, this seems awfully sweet to me - it's 1 oz of very sweet stuff and 1/4 oz lemon juice.

No Moon At All

2 oz Gin
1⁄4 oz Crème de Cacao
1⁄4 oz Chambord
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
Instructions

Dry shake for 10 seconds. Add crushed ice and shake throughly. Strain into a coupe.

Notes

My variation on a Sweet Moonlight - guessing on the proportions of the original and replacing the cassis with Chambord.

  • Used St George terrior gin (2.25 oz). Will use Fords gin (2.5 oz) next time because the creme liqueurs make the drink too sweet and overwhelm other flavors. As is, rate 3.0

A bit too bitter and not as fruity as I'd have expected, could probably do with a bit of syrup, or increase quantity of liqueurs. Tastes much better and sweeter if slowly sipped..

Catch Me If You Can

1⁄2 oz Cassis, Mathilde
1 twst Orange peel (or orange slice, as garnish)
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass (there should be some nice foam on top) and garnish with an orange wheel or peel.

Notes

This is a variation on The Blood and Sand which was named after a Rudolph Valentino movie, so I decided to name this drink after a modern movie. Leonardo DiCaprio is a past winner of Italy's Valentino award, so I chose "Catch Me If You Can." This recipe substitutes cranberry for orange juice and creme de cassis for cherry brandy. I halved the liqueur from the Blood and Sand to cut the sweetness down and used Punt e Mes to amp up the bitter notes.

Is the cranberry juice here sweetened (cocktail) or pure cranberry? Tried it with the pure juice and it tastes awful.

My guess is if the OP had to cut down the sweetness by halving the liqueur, they were using cocktail. Thanks,  Zachary
