Morgul Blade

1 1⁄2 oz Dark rum, Myers's Dark
1 1⁄2 oz Coffee liqueur, Kahlua
3 oz Coffee (cold)
1⁄4 t Absinthe
1⁄4 oz Black Sambuca
1⁄2 oz Overproof rum
2 ds Bitters
Instructions

Stir together all ingredients in a large Old-Fashioned glass with a couple ice cubes.

Notes

Don't use cold brew, the flavor is too weak.Works well as an after-dinner drink, especially if you need a food-coma antidote.

Use a dark roast coffee. Death Wish (brand) recommended for its high caffeine and fitting the theme of the drink.

Don't overdo the absinthe or Sambuca, the anise will overpower everything else. If you want to reduce the anise you could use 1/2 Teaspoon Absinthe and no Sambuca.

Apollo's Revival

1⁄2 oz Don's Mix
1 oz Falernum
1 1⁄2 oz Gold rum
1⁄2 oz Overproof rum
1⁄4 t Absinthe
1⁄3 t Grenadine
1 spl Club soda
Instructions

Shake together everything but the club soda with ice. Pour into a pint glass* with 2-3 ice cubes. Fill with club soda.

* Needs to be roughly that volume, but a tiki-style mug would be thematically appropriate.

Notes

Variants: You can also make this with 1 oz Don's Mix if you want a more cinnamon-forward flavor, but this version is more balanced.

You can garnish with anything appropriate to Tiki drinks if you want. I'd probably do an orange wheel and a mint sprig.

No Bananas Today Zach!  Its actually supposed to be a singular banana chip.

Also Banana syrup can be seen in the link, but I used a Banana Oleo syrup that was delicious!

History

From the Old Waldorf Astoria Bar Book (1934), it's equal parts tom gin, brandy, whisky and sweet vermouth with a dash of orange bitters. This drink is a modern update.

Short Rib

2 oz Blanco tequila (jalapeno infused, see note)
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
Instructions

Shaken, double strained into coupe, no garnish.

Notes

I used 2 big jalapeño slices, with seeds, per 2oz of Don Julio Anejo Tequila infused for 1 or 2 days. Gives a nice pepper flavour but no heat . Once I left the infusion or over a week and it was too hot for me to handle, so just taste your infusion and decide based on your taste. Might try with agave nectar instead of simple syrup.

This is really good. The rum and orgeat make the sweet vermouth and campari a little gentler for those who oppose either ingredient but don't bury them for those of us who are a big fan of both. Really delicious.

Shawn C commented on 1/07/2025:

Looks like I might need to add some ingredients to clarify this one within the database structure, since aperitivo's are within the amaro classification. The original calls for Casoni Aperitivo 1814, not to be confused with Casoni Amaro (usually listed as "Casoni Heritage Amaro" in the U.S.) Various red/orange bitter aperitivo's are probably the closest subs for the 1814, since the 2024 London Spirits Competition taste panel description was "bitters that are delightful, with a perfect balance between sweetness and botanical complexity ending with a bitter note of bitter orange peel and cardamom."

Shawn C commented on 2/14/2025:

Casoni Aperitivo 1814 and Casoni Heritage Amaro have been added to the KC ingredient list, and the recipe has been updated accordingly.

  • Didn't have Scarlet Ibis - used Angostura Rum. Would limit the R&W to a bsp - 0.25 was sweet.
