This is really good. The rum and orgeat make the sweet vermouth and campari a little gentler for those who oppose either ingredient but don't bury them for those of us who are a big fan of both. Really delicious.

Worked well with Gran Classico.

Shawn C commented on 1/07/2025:

Looks like I might need to add some ingredients to clarify this one within the database structure, since aperitivo's are within the amaro classification. The original calls for Casoni Aperitivo 1814, not to be confused with Casoni Amaro (usually listed as "Casoni Heritage Amaro" in the U.S.) Various red/orange bitter aperitivo's are probably the closest subs for the 1814, since the 2024 London Spirits Competition taste panel description was "bitters that are delightful, with a perfect balance between sweetness and botanical complexity ending with a bitter note of bitter orange peel and cardamom."

Shawn C commented on 2/14/2025:

Casoni Aperitivo 1814 and Casoni Heritage Amaro have been added to the KC ingredient list, and the recipe has been updated accordingly.

  • Didn't have Scarlet Ibis - used Angostura Rum. Would limit the R&W to a bsp - 0.25 was sweet.

Tokyo Station

7⁄8 oz Gin, Tanqueray
2⁄3 oz Suze
1 bsp Grenadine
1 wdg Lime (as garnish)
Instructions

Shake and strain into a Martini glass. Garnish.

Notes

Tip: When you’re halfway through the cocktail, squeeze the lime wedge into the remainder. This transforms the cocktail so the lime dominates a bit more over the Suze. The two tastes of the Tokyo Station are supposed to mimic a train coming and going.

It has a nice balance of sweet sour and bitter.
I tried it with a half salted rim, and that elevated it more.

  • Might want to specify the rum or rum family - the rum I unfortunately chose (Diplomatico) made this undrinkably sweet; I was able to balance it to ok with about another 1/2 oz of lemon juice.
  • Boozy lemon-tea flavors. Sweet and almost fruity at sip, long finish brings in balancing tannic and bitter flavors.

Hemingway stirred nonsense

1 1⁄2 oz Haitian Rum, Barbancourt 8
1⁄3 oz Dry apricot brandy (Apricot eau de vie)
1 oz Orange vermouth, Martini & Rossi Fiero
7 dr Orange cream citrate
Instructions

Stir, strain, coupe.

Notes

Martini fiero is a kind of grapefruit aperitivo.

I've used Barbancourt 50% 11y from silver seal.

Maraschino and apricot eau de vie work very well.

Great drink - the orgeat gives it a creamy, smooth feel and taste. Pretty drink and only lightly sweet which was great (I used apricot brandy though rather than liqueur).
