Great idea and overall composition, but 1/2 oz of lime makes it too tart/sour, burying the other flavors, at least when it is cold. (Without ice this would improve as it warmed since other flavor intensities increase as a drink warms while the acidity doesn't change much.) I retried with 1/4 oz lime and it was better while still having some of the lime character. I might do this and add a lime peel as garnish to provide the aroma without the additional acidity of the original. I wonder what a dash or two of celery or lemon bitters might do here? Rating this a 4/5 as modified.

Roman Holiday

3 oz Prosecco

East Indian Swizzle

1 1⁄2 oz Cognac
1 1⁄2 oz Pineapple juice
1⁄2 oz Triple sec
2 ds Orange bitters, Angostura
Instructions

Add all ingredients to a Collins glass. Slowly add crushed ice and swizzle until a frost forms on the outside of the glass. Add more crushed ice to fill, top with Angostura and add cinnamon stick and edible orchid (if using).

Mismaloya

2 oz Blanco tequila
2 sli Cucumber
2 spg Rosemary
1⁄2 oz Simple syrup
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
1 oz Tonic water (to top)
Instructions

Shake 1 cucumber slice and 1 rosemary sprig with tequila, simple and lime over ice. Strain over new ice into a Collins glass. Top with tonic, garnish with remaining cucumber and rosemary.

I was skeptical, but this is surprisingly decent. A great cocktail to make if you have cucumbers and rosemary from the garden. I think the sweetness from the simple syrup and the tonic water is slightly excessive. But cucumber flavor kind of needs some sweetness, so the next time I make it, and I shall, it will be a small reduction in the simple syrup, maybe 3/4 oz for two servings.

Cynar What I Mean?

1 1⁄8 oz Cynar
7⁄8 oz Sweet vermouth, Carpano Punt e Mes
1 t Maraschino Liqueur
2 oz Soda water
1 twst Orange peel
Instructions

Stir, strain, Collins, top with soda, twist.

Notes

Also good à la Royale, with Champagne/sparkling wine instead of soda.

History

EGullet user Adam George's riff on my Old Giuseppe, with the Cynar and Punt switched and soda as the lengthener, described by him as a "super complex Americano twist." My original is 1.5 oz Punt e Mes / .75 oz Cynar / .25 Luxardo Maraschino, with an optional splash of Prosecco and a lemon twist.

  • Made with a homemade spiced vermouth. Nice drink but not really much like a martini.
  • Olive is good. Used Thomas Dakin Gin which adds a nice herbal side to what could be quite a sweet drink. Noilly Prat.
  • Accessible martini riff. Olive garnish, per the original, made it more interesting.
