Progressive Orangutan

1 1⁄2 oz Rye, Rittenhouse
1 oz Dry vermouth (Carpano Dry Vermouth)
1⁄2 oz Bigallet China-China
1 ds Orange bitters ("Feegan's" mix 1:1 Fee's Orange and Regan's)
1 twst Orange peel (expressed and placed in drink)
Instructions

Stir liquid ingredients with ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass. Express an orange twist and drop in drink.

Notes

I could have called this "Orange, Three Ways" (or 4 ways considering the two orange bitters, orange amaro, and orange peel.) There is a medley of orange flavors here, but without orange juice.

I made this first with a low rye bourbon (Evan Williams Bonded) which was well received, but we preferred a bit more pepper from Rittenhouse Rye.

Despite using a dry vermouth, the half ounce of Bigallet China-China imparted a substantial but pleasant sweetness to the cocktail.

History

I enjoy the Liberal cocktail (using Bigallet China-China Amer rather than Amer Picon) and some variations, and wanted to do a riff on it employing Carpano Dry Vermouth rather than a sweet vermouth. The Carpano Dry has become my favorite dry of late, and I thought it would fit well here, providing flavorful body while allowing the orange of the Amer and bitters to stand out.

I kicked around several names, including references to Teddy Roosevelt's "Bull Moose" Progressive party as a Liberal riff. My emphasis for the drink was making orange the star, but I didn't want a generic name, so I began looking for some other way of referencing it. Orangutan seemed a tongue-in-cheek way to invoke the orange, so I fused that with progressive.

Notes

Can go a little longer on the syrup to play up the bitter notes or a little shorter to play up the sour. Swap for a lemon twist for more citrus and less floral notes.

Plátano Imitación

1 oz Añejo rum (pref. Uruapan Charanda Anejo)
1⁄2 oz Aperol
1⁄4 oz Oleo-saccharum (Banana)
Instructions

Stir all ingredients over ice and strain into chilled Nick and Nora glass.

Notes

To make the banana oleo-saccharum, I cut the peels from two bright yellow bananas into 1/2" pieces and placed them in a small mason jar with 5 tsp granulated white sugar. The jar was sealed tight and left for 24 hours at room temperature before straining the resulting liquid through a coffee filter.

History

Attempting to recreate a wonderful cocktail from a recent outing to a local imbibery. The original featured tobacco bitters and madeira. Without those ingredients at home, I replaced the tobacco bitters with a dash each of Angostura and black walnut bitters, and the madeira with a half measure of Carpano Antica. Proportions of the original were unknown, but 2:1:1/4 felt right for this split-base, Manhattan/Boulevardier offshoot.

History

This cocktail was borne out of scarcity. I had a bunch of bottles with dregs in them, but I wanted a negroni. Turns out, splitting the elements made for a very interesting drink. I didn't split the base and I'm glad because the funk of the S&C stood up well to what was going on with the sweets. FWIW, it seemed to improve with a little time to sit. Or maybe that was just my mood.
