Don't Mention the War

10 lf Basil (muddled)
1 oz Gin
1⁄2 oz Dry vermouth
1 spg Basil (as garnish)
Instructions

Muddle 10 basil leaves in maraschino. Add other liquid ingredients and stir with ice. Double strain, up, garnish.

Notes

Aim was to build on Black Forest cake chocolate and kirsch flavors, but letting the herbaceous basil and sharp gin pull the drink back from being too dessert-y.

History

Made for the Reddit Original Cocktail Competition, October 2026: Basil and fruit brandy.

Sidewinds

3⁄4 oz Swedish Punsch
3⁄4 oz Campari
3⁄4 oz Apricot liqueur
3⁄4 oz Cream of coconut, Coco López
3 spg Mint (As garnish)
Instructions

Whip shake with crushed ice, pour into a mug, top with crushed ice, and garnish with mint sprigs.

Notes

A bitter and funky take on the classic Tradewinds.

History

My open can of Coco Lopez had me thinking about the Tradewinds, and its apricot liqueur made me consider how well bitter liqueurs would work in there. My original idea was to do a Ferrari-based (Fernet-Campari) riff, but the flavors ended up too muddied, so I changed it up by dropping the Fernet from that and returning it to being a bit more rum-driven. Nixing the Fernet over the Campari was a no brainer for the latter works rather well with apricot liqueur such as in the A Study in Pink and the Jungle Hotel Bird. The apricot also pointed me to its synergy with Swedish punsch which I learned about in the Havana Cocktail, and Swedish punsch works great with Campari from a trio of drinks I had in 2012 – namely, Sleeping with Strangers, Barefoot in the Dark, and Deck Hand. For a name, I dubbed it the Sidewinds named after a breezes that can blow a moving object off its direction of travel.

My Favorite Mutiny

1 1⁄2 oz Pineapple rum
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
1⁄2 oz Bénédictine
1⁄2 oz Crème de Cacao
1 ds Absinthe
1 pn Nutmeg (Freshly grated, as garnish.)
Instructions

Whip shake with crushed ice, pour into a mug, fill with more crushed ice, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

History

I was inspired by a drink at Trina's Starlite Lounge called the Wagon Wheel Watusi with rye, Smith & Cross, Benedictine, crème de cacao, and lime. Trina's has paired cacao and Benedictine together before in the Grandpa's Drunk, and I have enjoyed the combination in drinks like the Divorcé in NYC and included it in my King of Birds. For a direction, I took it in the way of the Jet Pilot riff Benny & the Jets and I dubbed it after a 2006 hip-hop song by The Coup called My Favorite Mutiny. I had enjoyed that song in a playlist created by a tequila brand ambassador, and I made note of it in my list of potential drinks names a few years ago.

Electric Circus (Yarm)

1 oz Mezcal
1⁄2 oz Cynar
1 twst Orange peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into an old fashioned glass with ice, and garnish with an orange twist.

History

After spotting a rye drink on a menu that had Cynar and Montenegro as modifiers, I realized that it was similar to what I enjoyed in the Tio Amargo with Demerara rum. I was inspired to swap the base to a split of mezcal and pineapple rum which I discovered in the Hunter Thompson and utilized a few times before such as in the Cannibal Cove last Fall. For a name, I dubbed this one the Electric Circus after the 1960s New York City nightclub with a variety of performers often associated with Andy Warhol that I read about in the St. Marks Is Dead book. From 1967 to 1971, the Electric Circus incorporated the big top aspect with everything from jugglers, mimes, trapeze artists, and body painting, and added in other performances like psychadelic multi-projector audiovisual shows and bands like The Velvet Underground, The Grateful Dead, and Sly & the Family Stone. One quote about the establishment caught my curiosity with, "Like Woodstock, if you remembered much of what happened at the E.C., you weren't really there."

Maelstrom

1 oz Cachaça
1⁄2 oz Pineapple juice
1⁄2 oz Cinnamon syrup
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail coupe.

History

While practicing my "Minimalist Amaro Talk" for Boston Rum Week 2026, I was inspired by Sother Teague's Rough Seas, and I took its cachaça-Jägermeister base and partnered it with the pineapple, cinnamon, and lime of Death & Co.'s Gilda Cocktail. Getting influence from the Rough Seas' name and keeping a German theme with the kräuterlikör, I dubbed this one the Maelstrom.
