Endurance

Stir in a mixing glass with ice to chill, then strain into a double Old Fashioned glass filled ¾ of the way with crushed ice. Top with additional crushed ice to ascend above the rim of the glass, and add a straw.

Notes

Bitter and cold. Used Shackleton Scotch, Salers (Suze would also be acceptable), and Tempus Fugit crème de menthe.

History

Named for Ernest Shackleton’s ship “Endurance,” which, trapped in Antarctic pack ice, sank in 1915 and was discovered in 2022. Used “Shackleton” Scotch whisky as the base, a blended malt based on bottles discovered at one of Ernest Shackleton’s earlier expedition sites.

Tried again with Suze and Glenlivet 12 Year single malt. Salers may work a tad better here, but either will do the trick. Still very good.

The Drink of Insignificance

1 1⁄2 oz Cynar
1⁄2 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
2⁄3 oz Sweet vermouth, Carpano Punt e Mes (A heavy 1/2+ oz, I typed 5/8 oz but the database forced 2/3 oz)
3⁄8 oz Maraschino Liqueur (A light 1/2- oz)
3 ds Bitters, Angostura
1 Cherry (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with a cherry.

Notes

This was too aggressively Maraschino at 1/2 oz each Punt e Mes and Maraschino and too light at 3/4 oz Punt e Mes and 1/4 oz Maraschino. So perhaps 5/8 oz Punt e Mes and 3/8 oz Maraschino is a solid midpoint.

History

I was inspired by the Daiquiri-esque The Drink of Laughter and Forgetting (served to me at Cure in New Orleans in 2011 and that I make for folks at work) to see if its 3 parts Cynar to 1 part Green Chartreuse base would work in a Manhattan. I had previously used the duo as the support to base spirits in the Up Jumped the Devil and the Mockingbird, Wish Me Luck, but here I wanted to use them as the base again. For the support, I focused on the Punt e Mes-Maraschino combination of the Red Hook. For a name, since there was already a Milan Kundera book title connection with The Drink of Laughter and Forgetting, I likewise dubbed this The Drink of Insignificance.

Rooster Tail

1 1⁄2 oz Irish whiskey (Fighting 69th)
1 oz Cassis
3⁄4 oz Citron liqueur, Sukkah Hill Etrog
3⁄4 oz Orange juice
1 ds Mint Bitters
6 Blackberry
Instructions

Muddle the blackberries in a shaker.
Add ingredients into shaker.
Add ice cubes into shaker.
Shake very vigorously.
Remove shaker lid.
Remove ice cubes.
Pour shaker contents into a frozen couple glass.

Notes

I prefer to have the muddled blackberries in my glass, so I use ice cubes rather than crushed ice.
