Slippery When Wet

1 Strawberry (or two if small)
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
1⁄2 oz Honey
2 oz Gin
1 t Greek yogurt (heaping)
1 pn Black pepper (as garnish)
1 sli Strawberry (as garnish)
Instructions

Muddle strawberry in lemon juice and honey. Add gin, yogurt, and ice, and shake. Double-strain on crushed ice in rocks glass and garnish.

"Some include a dash of Angostura bitters." The earliest recipes in The Stork Club (1946) and Trader Vic's Bartender Guide (1946) both do. And the one I spotted in Unvarnished (2020) does to. Only Imbibe Magazine leaves it out.

Very similar to the Honeysuckle and Honey Bee (both recipes appear in Embury) which both have lemon juice but have white rum and Jamaican rum, respectively.

Barcelonnette

2 oz Blanco tequila

History

Named for the dreaded weather phenomenon we see in the Midwest of part snow and part freezing rain. And we just got some dumped on us in the middle of April in Chicago. This one is also a two-fer, part of my ongoing "4 parts, equal parts, stirred" series and also part of my "Cocktails from the Corona Bunker" series.

Notes

The aloe hits first and is fruity and herbal, followed by the smoke and body of the mezcal. I thought it was just pretty okay up until the point that the bittersweet complexity of the Cynar hit the back and sides of my tongue. Then, holy shit... it just all melded in a way that had me craving another sip, and then another... and then another cocktail.

  • Good! But I like my mistake (Clearly Aloe'n) much better.
  • Starts bright, fruity, and herbal. Melts into smoke. Finishes bittersweet and complex, inviting a subsequent sip. Easy to make; hard to stop sipping.

Italian Stallion

1 oz Aperol
3⁄4 oz Aveze (Suze or Salers or similar gentian liqueur will work)
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
1⁄2 oz Passion fruit syrup
2 oz Soda water (In glass, not in shake)
1 twst Orange peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a Collins glass containing 2 oz soda water. Fill with ice cubes, add a straw, and garnish with an orange twist.

Notes

Overall, the drink's appearance and balance is a complex orange soda albeit one with herbal and tropical flavors in the mix.

History

When I was plotting turning over the cocktail menu for Winter/Spring 2016 at Loyal Nine, I needed some new low proof drinks. For inspiration, I started to riff on Michael McIlroy's Rome With a View. Given that we had an abundance of Avèze gentian liqueur, I wanted to include that (instead of Rome With a View's Campari) especially after having tried the Vatican City riff of that neo-classic. Another drink that came to mind for a flavor combination was the Square Root in pairing Aperol, gentian, and citrus. Given how well passion fruit works with bitter liqueurs, I considered taking things in a tropical direction. Finally, the name Italian Stallion came up from thinking about Rome and Italian themes, and a kitchy movie title seemed apropos. In 2020, this drink was placed on the menu at the Paper Plane in San Jose, California, as part of their guest drink section.
