Northern Lights

Instructions

Lemon twist, Shake, Straight Up, Cocktail

Notes

Created by bar manager Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli, this cocktail was mentioned in our First Taste of Craigie On Main in Cambridge, Massachusetts as having a “spectrum of refreshing flavors. That might account for why it is now the #1 favorite of customers there. It's a great drink for those who think they don't like Scotch. The liquor adds a subtle smokiness, but doesn'€™t overpower. You can substitute your choice of Scotch and use regular simple syrup for the Demerara, but the other brands are pretty much required to get the desired effect.

  • Might try again with 1-3/4 oz Scotch and 1/2 oz St Germain.
  • Nice balance; made with JWB. Was hoping to taste more of the Clear Creek, which I've been looking for ways to use.

  • Excellent use of dry sherry. I used fino, which doesn't always play well with other ingredients. Can be a bit briny. But here it works really nicely with both the sweetness in the bourbon and the bitterness in the Ramazzotti. 4.5 if I could.
  • I agree with other user - very clean, citrusy, almost metallic despite having bourbon. Don't skimp on the essential lemon oils! Delightful!
  • Hard to describe taste: I want to say "clean," almost like the water I'd drink from the garden hose as a kid. Metal, citrusy, and bitter on the edges, but easy drinking. — ★★★★

Added attribution and slightly reformatted to our style guidelines. Thank you alphanumeric. I need to revisit this Manhattan-esque again!

AmyJ commented on 6/11/2014:

Enjoyed a super tasty variation with Averna instead of Ramazotti and 1/4oz Orancio vermouth instead of triple sec (alt ways to get hint of orange and balance sweetness). Really nice

Made this tonight with Amaro Montenegro and it was delightful.

I made your chocolate cake with strawberry instead of chocolate. Scrumptious!

History

Several variations exist in the reference, getting progressively more complicated (including eventually lemon, mirto, and absinthe). The recipe shown here is relatively simple and still very good. Correct title of a revised version of this cocktail is Second Bounce because it was the second attempt at making it. Therefore I've renamed previously untitled cocktail First Bounce. Was originally posted incorrectly as Second Boz

Watery, not much on the palate except a muted and confused bitterness.

  • Tried with lime and was only so-so. Tried Scrappy's Celery bitters on top of cucumber slice, but it was too overpowering. Maybe Grapefruit? — ★★★

  • I added a Grand Marnier float.
  • Nice easy rum/sour. Used R&W and Dashfire lemon, 1/2 Flor de Cana 7 and 1/2 Angostura 12.
  • Excellent. I made mine with Cockspur 12 and Plantation OFTD. The lemon bitters balance the floral notes in the Apricot Liqueur nicely. — ★★★★

  • Try using Yellow Chartreuse?
  • Too bitter, used blackberry brandy instead of maraschino liquor. Dania says no bitters. Used all ingredients from the recipe. Dania hates bitters. Lol
  • Despite its aggressive name, this is pretty easy-going. The sweet Aperol is foremost. Smokiness is subtle to me though still to much for Friend. Chartreuse still more subtle.
  • Complex w/o being challenging. Perfect cocktail to hook someone who says they don't like tequilla. Beautiful color, too.
  • A bit strange and a bit sweet. Promising. Might be better with less Maraschino and something to dry it out. — ★★★★

I read this to my wife, who likes van Aviation, and her reaction was, "that's disgusting!". Not that it wouldn't taste good. But what's the concept here?

Any idea of the background or history?
