Welcome to the new Kindred Cocktails

We've completely redesigned and rewritten Kindred Cocktails. Cosmetically, we've updated it to modern web standards. You'll find it much easier and more complete on mobile devices. Most every feature has been retained and a few new ones added. Some features have moved to new, more logical places. And inside almost 95% of the code has been updated or rewritten. Explore. Let us know if you find anything that doesn't work as you'd expect.

If you've contributed cocktails, you'll find that our philosophy on submissions has changed. Previously we accepted recipes that weren't in conformance with our Style Guidelines. They were not published, but you could keep them in your cocktail book. All these private cocktails weren't shared, and this ran contrary to our concept of kindred -- a community of like-minded cocktail lovers. So now we accept only three unpublished cocktails at a time. Unpublished cocktails should be improved to meet our style guidelines and re-submitted for publication. Or merged into another existing cocktail. Or even deleted if not of sufficient quality. We hope this change creates a database of high-quality recipes for everyone to enjoy.

To help you keep track of your personal variation on a cocktail's ingredients, each cocktail book entry can have custom ingredients. Use the Paste Recipe button, then customize the ingredients to your liking. When you view the cocktail's page, you can see either your custom ingredients or the official ingredients.

We hope you'll enjoy the new version. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook if you'd like.

Derby Cup

1 1⁄4 oz Bourbon
3⁄4 oz Mint syrup (See notes.)
1 1⁄4 oz Pimm's No. 1 Cup
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
2 oz Soda water (In glass, not shake.)
1 spg Mint (As garnish.)
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a Collins glass containing 2 oz soda water. Top with crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig and 2 borage flowers (if available). Floating a barspoon of funky Jamaican rum like Wray & Nephew or Smith & Cross would not be out of place here (originally intended but left out of this drink of the day recipe). As for the mint syrup, a tea made from a steep with hot simple syrup, but muddling mint sprigs in simple syrup and straining will work well.

Notes

Appears in Maggie Hoffman's 2019 Batch Cocktails: Make-Ahead Pitcher Drinks for Every Occasion book.

History

For a drink of the day at Loyal Nine, I decided to make a mashup of two popular summer drinks -- namely a cross between a Mint Julep and a Pimm's Cup. From the Julep, I kept the Bourbon, mint, and crushed ice aspects and I considered floating a barspoon of Jamaican rum which is a technique called for in a few late 19th century drink books (I left it out since I figured that the extra ingredient would confuse the verbal description of the drink by servers at the tables); and from the Pimm's Cup, I kept the Pimm's, lemon, soda, and borage flower garnishes.

  • I did not like this as much as I thought I would. It reminds me of drinking strawberry jam. Not enough lime juice and the sherry really disappears. Maybe I'll try cutting the simple to 1/2 next time.

Rougarou Daiquiri

1 3⁄4 oz Añejo rum (Barbancourt 8 Year was what I used)
3⁄4 oz Cynar
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
1⁄8 oz Allspice Dram
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

History

During Tales of the Cocktail 2017, I met a New Orleans local who told me about his childhood fears of the Rougarou, a werewolf that roams the Bayou and snatches up little kids. The term is believed to have stemmed from the French word loup-garou, and the spelling and pronunciation change was probably through the Cajuns in that region. So for a drink of the day atat Loyal Nine after I got back, I tried to capture the funk of the swamp and the swamp monster itself in a glass, and I came up with a Daiquiri variation inspired in part by the Navy Dock Daiquiri and the Frequent Flier (links to those drinks in the source reference link). I was originally going to go with the Smith & Cross Rum in the Navy Dock Daiquiri, but instead I opted for the slightly funky Barbancourt 8 Year Rhum especially given the Haitian connection to mysticism.

New Dog

Instructions

Shake with ice, strain out ice, then dry shake with egg

Notes

Interesting flavor but too sweet. Sugar needs to be cut back and could also use more smoke, salt, or bitterness/herbaceousness. Perhaps different amari? USE SFUMATO RABARBARO??!
