Kingston Watusi
Build in an old fashioned glass, add a large ice cube, and stir to mix and chill. No garnish.
A crazy dance of flavors.
Late one Saturday night, I finished my bartending work week and needed a nightcap. I was too tired to peruse cocktail books for a recipe, so I began to think about a few flavor combinations including Smith & Cross Rum-Campari in the Kingston Negroni, Campari-banana liqueur in the Banana Boulevardier, Fernet-banana in the Banana Toronto, and Campari-Fernet in the Eeyore's Requiem. As the dance of ingredients came together, I dubbed it the Kingston Watusi.
- The S&C along with the fernet dominates; banana gets lost. Lots of adventurous directions.
- Flying Circus — Rum, Bitters, Fernet Branca, Demerara sugar
- The Four Humours — Jamaican rum, Virgin Islands Rum, Santa Maria al Monte, Bitters, Peychaud's Bitters, Bénédictine
- Maybe...? — Bourbon, Fernet Jelínek, Bitters, Pineapple syrup, Citric acid
- Dead Glamour — Reposado Tequila, Campari, Santa Maria al Monte, Bitters
- Wall Street Insider — Bourbon, Falernum, Campari, Fernet Branca, Chocolate bitters, Orange peel
There's a lot going on here. As a pre-dinner drink it is both a tad too sweet and too bitter for me at the moment. I'm looking forward to how it evolves as the large rock melts.
I'm digging the funky aroma more than anything. Nice playground for S&C.
