Fly Swatter

3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
3⁄4 oz Ruby Port, Sandeman
1⁄2 oz Allspice Dram
1 Ginger (Nickel-sized slice, as garnish)
1 Blackberry (As garnish)
Instructions

Shake with ice; strain into chilled coupé. Garnish.

Notes

Assemble garnishes on a cocktail pick. I used house-made dram, but the commercial stuff, e.g., St. Elizabeth's, is just fine.

  • I had some leftover ginger from making anise-scented short ribs & built this recipe around it. Originally an aromatic cocktail, it needed some acid to balance the sweetness — hence the lemon juice.

Needs a bit of tweaking: start with reducing lemon juice to 0.5 oz, then Allspice Dram to 0.25 oz, if necessary.

Mexican Razor Blade

1 pn Cayenne pepper (as garnish)
Instructions

Shake with 2 small cuke slices, strain, up, garnish with floating cuke slice with powdered chile sprinkled on top.

Piquín chile also suggested, and Greenbaum notes that agave or honey sweeteners work well as subs, and fresh chiles or strawberries can be thrown in.

Simple and refreshing! Next time I will probably use just a bit less lime, and muddle the cucumber so that its flavor is more evident.

  • Used 2 dashes Angostura Aromatic bitters and 2 dashes Reagans — ★★★★
  • I was skeptical with all that lemon but it balanced out well. Drambuie with dark rum also seemed unusual but again, it worked!

A couple of questions for you: is that a homemade chocolate extract, and If not, is there a brand you like? Can you provide a recipe or some guidelines for the stout reduction?  Thanks,  Zachary

  • Wow! The cucumber juice is spectacular and the rest of the drink supports it beautifully. I made with Bombay but this drink is screaming for Hendricks.

Your note mentions Spanish vermouth but Dolin is French... if you need to change the brand of vermouth, let me know and I'll fix it. Thanks,  Zachary

drdug commented on 6/25/2022:

This is a perennial favorite. I’m able to get Atxa, a Spanish dry vermouth locally. Tried to edit the recipe but this brand wasn’t recognized and wouldn’t save. Agree with other commentators the Hendricks is my favorite gin for this cocktail!

Death and Taxes

1 1⁄2 oz Bourbon, Maker's Mark
1⁄4 oz Dry Raspberry Brandy (raspberry eau de vie)
1⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Yellow Chartreuse
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
3⁄4 oz Raspberry syrup (1:1)
1 ds Absinthe
1 oz Egg white (one medium)
1 twst Lemon
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Express a lemon twist over the drink and garnish.

Notes

Reformulated in early 2024 to be structured more like a classic Whiskey Sour. The original version was created early on in my journey into mixed drinks and was unbalanced, too small, and made use of sub-par ingredients (Chambord).

I recommend a barely-legal rye and cold-process raspberry syrup. Without the sharpness in the latter this can risk being too sweet.

History

Inspired by the appearance of the quote in a letter from Benjamin Franklin to Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, I wanted to bring together American and French ingredients.
