La Savane

3⁄4 oz Rhum Agricole
3⁄4 oz Mezcal
1 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano (Or Lillet Blanc)
1⁄2 oz Swedish Punsch
1 twst Orange peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with an orange twist.

History

When I recently recalled the Metexa, a delighful aperitif of Lillet, tequila, and Swedish punsch from the 1937 Café Royal Cocktail Book, I decided to riff on it. Instead of the classic's tequila base, I kept the agave theme with some mezcal and split it with rhum agricole for that spirit paired well with Swedish punsch in the Sleeping with Strangers. I also adjusted the ratios to make it more of a cocktail instead of an aperitif. For a name, I dubbed this one the La Savane after a garden and park on Martinique.

1 3⁄4 oz Calvados
3⁄4 oz Bénédictine
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
1 cube Pineapple (as garnish)
Instructions

Shake, strain, coupe, garnish.

Notes

This started out as a Hula Cocktail (from a source I neglected to write down): 2 applejack, 1 pineapple juice, 1/2 lemon. It needed something (I want to say it's a late 20s/early 30s source), and the Benedictine was staring at me.

  • Made with dry rye gin. Closer to a Martinez or Hanky Panky than a Manhattan. Good feature of sloe gin, the fruitiness of which goes well with the vermouth.

Probably 1 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/2 oz is the closest American build for this (within 5%). Cynar and sloe gin are an elegant duo.

Havana Smash

1⁄2 Lemon (Medium lemon in wedges to yield around 3/4 oz juice when muddled)
6 lf Mint (6-8 leaf depending on size and flavor intensity)
1 1⁄2 oz Gin
1⁄2 oz Swedish Punsch
1⁄2 oz Apricot liqueur
1 spg Mint (1-3 sprigs as garnish)
Instructions

Muddle lemon wedges, add mint, and lightly muddle again. Add the rest of the ingredients, shake with ice, and double strain into a double old fashioned glass. Fill with crushed ice and garnish with mint sprigs.

Notes

Havana Cocktail crossed with a modern version of the Smash

History

When I thought about the apricot-Swedish punsch combination in the Havana Cocktail, I decided to take it in the direction of the Dale DeGroff/Eastern Standard's Whiskey Smash with muddled citrus wedges and mint (opposed to the classic Smash which is a Mint Julep on a smaller scale).

Etrog is a new discovery. First taste is very much Limoncello, but with very little sweet and lots of Lemon bite. Very nice.

Le Ginocchia dell'Ape

2 oz Cynar 70
3⁄4 oz Honey syrup (roughly 1:1)
1⁄4 oz Nardini Mandorla
Instructions

Shake, strain, up.

Notes

This is.... interesting. I've got some pretty dark and punchy clover honey from some dude on the side of the road out by the Bridge of the Gods, and every time I tasted it I kept thinking about Cynar and how it marries flavors. The Mandorla is nice but not critical - it's almondy and helps relieve the bitterness.

Even though I posted this, I actually used Cynar since I didn't have Averna. And Bruce Cost ginger ale instead of ginger beer. Annnnd closer to 1/2 lime than 1/3. But I'm sure it's good either way.

Boston Lady

1 1⁄2 oz Gin
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
1⁄2 oz Apricot liqueur
1⁄4 oz Grenadine
Instructions

Shake once without ice and once with ice, and strain into a cocktail coupe.

History

During quarantine, I ran a few virtual USBG Boston Classic Cocktail Happy Hours. During one of them, the topic of drinks created in or named after Boston came up. When the Boston Cocktail was mentioned, I commented that it was Mr. Boston renaming the Bermudian or Bermuda Rose in 1935 to fit a theme instead of creating a cocktail anew. The flavor profile here was influenced style-wise by the classic Boxcar that I had just made to take the Boston Cocktail in a White Lady direction to craft the Boston Lady.
