Works very nicely with Monkey Shoulder for the whiskey in the absence of Bushmill's.
Note: The published Death & Co. recipe excludes the Xocolatl bitters, but Ward specifically lists it in his recipe (see the 2010 link.)
The original recipe specified adding 1 dash of Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters, and the cocktail name was "St. Columb's Rill", not "St. Columbus Rill". St. Columb's Rill is a stream on which the Bushmill distillery was originally built. The name pays tribute to Saint Columba of Cornwall, and has nothing to do with Columbus.
Do you have a link to that effect? My copy of Death & Co. has this as written. Thanks, Zachary
Here is a 2010 blog post that had a direct correspondence with Phil Ward:
My copy of Death & Co’s first book (1st edition) definitely lists it as St. Columb’s Rill. And this backs up Jojiro’s claim:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Columbs_Rill
They must've fixed it up after the 2014 printing. Mine bought in the first month of it coming out has it spelled as St. Columbus, and hence, that's the way it appears in my blog when I made it.
Updated name and ingredients accordingly. Thanks all!
My copy of the book has no mole bitters - neither does the ebook.
Phil apparently gave out the recipe with molé bitters back in 2010 (see link). When I made it from the book, my blog says no bitters.

Curated to add a reference to the blog link with Phil Ward's specific listing of Xocolatl bitters that is missing from the Death & Co. recipe. That should settle any further confusion about whether the bitters were intended to be there.
To a cocktail shaker, add all the ingredients (except for the nutmeg) and dry shake vigorously. Add ice and shake again. Double strain into a coupe and garnish with nutmeg.
Too high proof for egg white: it curdled.
Shake with ice and strain into a coupe.

Shake; strain. Cocktail glass. Grapefruit twist garnish.
Stir all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass; strain. Serve straight up or over fresh ice to taste.
Cinnamon syrup: In a small pan, mix and boil 3/4 c each sugar and water plus 5-6 cinnamon sticks; stir to dissolve sugar. Cover and remove from heat until cool. Remove cinnamon and strain syrup into clean jar; refrigerate up to 2 weeks.
Twin Valley Distillery (central Maryland) is producing some good spirits, including this robust whiskey. Delicious in fall cocktails.
