Holiday in the Mediterranean

1 1⁄2 oz Gin
1 oz Orange vermouth, Martini & Rossi Fiero
1⁄3 oz Licor 43
1⁄3 oz Mastika (Skinos Mastiha)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Notes

The vanilla of the Licor 43 takes some of the harsher edges off of the Fiero, rounding out the flavor. I found the two work together in other cocktails as well. I enjoyed the results so much that I picked up another bottle of Fiero.

History

I built this around Martini & Rossi's Fiero Aperitivo. Fiero is an orange vermouth style, a wine aperitif, with an orange zest/juice dominated profile. I became aware of it while trying to locate "Rossi Aperitif", an ingredient in a few cocktail's from Grassi's 1936 "1000 Misture." This led me to some old advertising posters that featured a big Sun-like orange, with a bottle of the aperitif balanced on its head, looking up with its tongue out, thirsting for a taste.

I can't be certain, but Fiero appears to be a modern version/relaunch of this "Vin Aperitif" as in a 1930's poster by Jean Droit. The 2020 launch of Fiero was aimed at the Aperol spritz market, but there is some parallel to wine based Cappelletti Aperitivo and Fiero seems to have noticeable wormwood as with vermouth.

I decided to combine Fiero with the vanilla notes of Spain's Licor 43, and the sweet resin of Skinos Mastiha to create a bright, sweet, fun orange-vermouth cocktail in the summer holiday vein. Tanqueray London Dry gin was the base spirit.

Genepy Passion

1 1⁄2 oz Gin (Hendrick’s “Flora Adora” limited edition works well)
3⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur (Dolin Genepy le Chamois)
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
1⁄4 oz Passion fruit juice (Muddle and strain juice of one passion fruit)
Instructions

Combine in a shaker filled with ice, shake, and strain into coupe glass.

Notes

I prefer fruity cocktails on the refreshing/tart side, so will usually up the lime juice to 1 oz. If prefer sweeter, can add a little more cherry liqueur and/or simple syrup.

A Kidnapped Drink

1 1⁄2 oz Cynar
1⁄2 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
3⁄8 oz Ginger syrup (See notes)
3⁄8 oz Honey syrup (See notes)
2 ds Bitters, Angostura (Plus a spritz for garnish)
Instructions

Shake with ice, strain into a cocktail coupe, and garnish with a spritz of Angostura Bitters (substitute a few drops).

Notes

3/4 oz honey-ginger syrup. Using 3/8 oz of each ingredient works well too.

History

After writing up a Penicillin riff called the Juju Man, I became inspired to riff on its citrus, honey, ginger aspect. I mashed up this concept with the Cynar-Chartreuse The Drink of Laughter and Forgetting and named it A Kidnapped Drink after another Milan Kundera work, A Kidnapped West.

Gusano Rojo

1 oz Mezcal
1 oz Campari
1⁄2 oz Honey syrup
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
1 pn Cayenne pepper (A sprinkle of pepper powder as garnish (floating))
Instructions

Shake with ice, strain into a coupe glass, and garnish with cayenne chili powder.

Notes

My Negroni Week 2023 offering. A mashup of the Red Grasshopper (tequila, honey, lime, garnish cayenne powder) and a Mezcal Negroni.

History

I decided to make a mashup of the Red Grasshopper with the Mezcal Negroni after spotting the cayenne pepper powder on the shelf as Negroni Week 2023 was coming up. I dubbed the end result the Gusano Rojo which is the Red Chili Worm that grows on mezcal plants.

Caught in a Cabaret

1 oz Tequila
1⁄2 oz Cynar
1⁄2 oz Sloe gin
1⁄2 oz Apricot liqueur
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail coupe.

History

I recently spotted a reference to Ted Haigh's Millionaire variation that reminded me of a Charlie Chaplin with its apricot, sloe, and lime. That got me motivated to riff on that trio of ingredients, and I latched onto the sloe gin aspect and decided to mash the Charlie Chaplin up with Phil Ward's Lipspin that complements the sloe gin with tequila and Cynar. For a name, I dubbed this after one of Charlie Chaplin's films and called it Caught in a Cabaret.
