Hot Vermouth

1 part Lemon juice
2 part Simple syrup (rosemary-infused)
4 part Sweet vermouth, Martini & Rossi
1 ? Water (hot; to taste)
Instructions

Use a glass or ceramic mug. Build everything but the hot water, then add as much hot water as you'd like, depending on taste. No garnish yet...maybe lemon zest or a lemon twist.

Notes

I used Martini & Rossi, but I bet it would be good or even better with a different brand.

This was my creation back in 2010 except that it was a whole egg and the rum was Old Monk (it was created for Mixoloseum's Thursday Drink Night with a theme of "dark rum"). My inspiration was the Diablo as well as an egg drink that I had earlier in the week.; to this day, I'm still not sure if citrus invalidates a drink from being a Flip (it certainly isn't a classical ingredient).

  • Not a big fan of Martinis, per se, even though gin is one of my favorite bases (along with bourbon,, vodka, Scotch, and rye. The dryness probably. But this one is great. Used Sipsmith gin. Rate 4.0
  • Used the Walter Navy Strength, reduced St Germain to 1/3, added lemon twist. Great floral martini.
  • Excellent riff on the martini - the dryness offset by the elderflower; can adjust as necessary. The creme de violette is supposed to give some color, but is very faint.

  • Very vibrant tangerine color. I like substituting green chartreuse or genepy le chamois.
  • 5/30/23: Really did not enjoy this. While I enjoy mezcal neat, I haven't found a mezcal cocktail I like.
  • Tried w/Green. Very good. See its potential.
  • Used Illegal resposado, doubled the mezcal, stellar drink.
  • Used green chartreuse. Lime juice down to ~0.5 oz works.
  • Much more than a last word paper plane combo. Gets better every time I mix one up. — ★★★★★
  • I made with Del Maguey mezcal joven and I wonder if I over-poured, as the smoky mezcal somewhat overpowered. Still a delicious drink. I'm looking forward to trying this again and tweaking the balance ever so slightly.
  • Split the tequila to be 1/2 oz mezcal and 1/2 oz jalapeno infused tequila; thereby creating Hot, Smoky, Naked and Famous — ★★★★★

Diego Valencia's Naked in the Desert subs sotol for the mezcal, serves on the rocks, and garnishes with a grapefruit twist and 6 drops Angostura bitters.

A variation I like: Anejo Mezcal, Lemon instead of Lime, and Green Chartreuse instead of the Yellow.  Add a handful of drops (maybe a dash) of Scrappy's Firewater bitters, to taste.

A new classic. I had a variation called Naked and Infamous (a common name) at Protocol in Amherst, MA that subbed Liquore Strega for Yellow Charteuse. Very good a nice option for these relatively Charteuse-starved times.

  • This ended up being too acidic for me though I didn't get the syrupy note that others did. I would try again but with reduced lemon juice.
  • Yum. Gotta love cocktails from the Savoy. I did not find it too syrupy.
  • Not terrible, but for me, not good. Drier than I expected, but very cough syrupy. The gin and the heering do not mix well here.

Tried it with a couple different gins. The bitterness of vermouth comes through with Plymouth. Used the Bombay London Dry (not sapphire) and it was well balanced, not too sweet, not too Dry, not too acidic.
