  • Friends like it
  • 5/18/19: Made a riff with WT 101, Lairds BIB, Courvoisier VS, S&C, 1 tsp 2:1 turbinado, 2 dashes Ango, lemon peel. Would like to try peach brandy in place of the apple brandy.
  • Fine, but less than the sum of its parts. Would rate it a 3 if it used fewer ingredients.
  • Want to try!
  • Autumn Cocktails
  • Boozy and subtle. ETA: subbed a nice pisco for cognac and liked it that way too. Toasted marshmallows.
  • Really delicious.
  • Complex and interesting, a good drink for a whiskey / brown spirits lover. Bitters add nice depth. Used agave in lieu of Demerara — ★★★★
  • Go strong on the bitters, esp chocolate.
Similar cocktails

I was pretty sure I'd like this one, but I also served it to someone whose idea of a cocktail requires soda (granted, he needed a strong drink). It really melded beautifully--the spiciness of the rye and sweet fruitiness of the calvados come to the forefront, made richer by the chocolate bitters.

We really liked this cocktail. We used Rye and Bourbon - Bulleit, Prunier VS Cognac, Clear Creek Pomme, Bitter Truth Mole Bitters for the original and thought it was just damn delightful.
Looking to do a punch version for possible fall menu consideration. Any thoughts or suggestions? Especially a beautiful garnish...would love to get our pastry chef involved.

According to the Death&Co cocktail book this cocktail also calls for 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon bark syrup. The year of creation is set to 2011.

This is a 5 star. I'm paring down my bar to about 15 bottles (not counting repeats like both Chartreuse or clear and aged rum) and mezcal didn't make the cut; I don't use it enough or love it. With this drink though, that's a sad thought. I did use regular syrup because I don't have cinnamon.

Opaka Raka

Shake, strain, ice-filled highball glass, garnish.

I used your recipe but altered it a bit and it turned out really good.  I didn't have grapefruit bitters but used rhubarb bitters instead and added grapefruit juice instead of lime juice. Really good. Thanks.

  • Added more lemon juice per comment as using R&W, but dominated by Lemon and Strega.

Moscow Mule

2 oz Vodka
Instructions

Stir vodka, and lime over ice. Top with ginger beer.

Notes

With Jameson, it's a 3-Legged Mule. With honey vodka, it's a Honey Bear. And with vanilla vodka and mint it's a Vanilla Mule. Some people add a dash of Angostura bitters.

A. J. Rathbun in Ginger Fizz and the Violet Fizz has 2 oz gin, 1 oz Cherry Heering, and an indeterminate amount of orange juice. Unlikely to make much difference.

Oddly reminiscent of a Singapore Sling, despite using orange juice vs. pineapple juice, plus all of the other differences. About a 3.5. Helps to have excellent fresh Washington navel oranges on a tree out back, I suspect that much of the dislike folks express for orange juice cocktails arises from the source/quality of the juice. You can't get this flavor out of concentrate, packaged juice, or many of the oranges that make it to the store.

Fletcher Christian

Instructions

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.

Notes

Substitute Ransom Old Tom Gin if there's not an oaked genever in your market, but don't use any bitters other than the Bitter Truth--it's far more floral and less vegetal than other celery bitters.

Nice drink but subbed St George's aged Dry Rye gin, 3/4 oz chartreuse and 1 dash bitters. Only had Fee Bros, fully agree a more floral bitters would be preferable.

In response to a curation request about the volume of Chartreuse and bitters, I did some looking. The Bitter Truth link is dead, so I removed it. Googling Fletcher Christian cocktail returns two hits - KC and a Wordpress blog whose cache shows a drink called the Oude Fletcher which is similar, but has 1/2 ounce of BT Celery bitters. Without confirmation that the drink as written is wrong, I'm going to leave this alone. Thanks,  Zachary

With respect to the 3 drops of Elixir Vegetal de la Grande Chartreuse: this is far more concentrated than Chartreuse so a few drops makes sense (subbing 3 drops of Chartreuse wouldn't, though)
