Fig Bee's Knees

1 1⁄2 oz Gin, Bluecoat
1 oz Honey syrup (Fig infused, see note)
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
Instructions

Shake with ice. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Notes

Cook fresh figs with 1 cup water and 1 cup honey. Simmer & remove from heat as soon as boiling begins. Push through strainer and refrigerate.

History

Renamed from Fig Martini, since it isn't, well, a Martini. It resembles a Bee's Knees, but with fig and lime in lieu of lemon.

Sounds very good, and a reason to finally get some Fee Black Walnut Bitters. Republished as a Fig Bee's Knees, since it is not a Martini-style cocktail. The original poster is welcome to rename it so long as the name conforms to any well-established drinks referenced in the name.

Prospect Park

1 1⁄2 oz Rye
1 1⁄2 oz Aperol
1⁄4 oz Simple syrup
1 Maraschino cherry (as garnish)
Instructions

Stir, strain, straight up, cocktail, garnish

Notes

Apparently Eastern Standard uses 1/2 oz of a 1:1 mixture of Maraschino and simple.

History

Riff on a Red Hook by adding Aperol. Prospect Park, like Red Hook, is in Brooklyn, NY. Both drinks start from a Manhattan.

If you can't spell Nonino, you aren't allowed to drink it. Go directly to Jägermeister; do not pass Go.

Hmm... I'm imagining a bar where you have to spell your drink in order to get served. As much as I abhor mangled English, I do not go there often. ;)

Great cocktail! I enjoyed one of these last weekend at the Eastern Standard.

When I asked for the recipe, I was told they cut the Luxardo Maraschino Liquor with a 1:1 simple syrup for this cocktail. Sure enough, when I mixed this up at home according to the ratios here, I found the drink was overpowered with the Maraschino flavor!

Thoughts, anyone?

Dan commented on 5/29/2013:

I believe it. Recipe adjusted as per your info. Thanks!

Following a discussion about why you can't make Manhattan variants with Scotch, I made this with Monkey Shoulder and recommend the result. Maybe a little sweeter than with rye, and almost certainly needs a new name. Tartan Hook?

yarm commented on 5/13/2024:

When I got the recipe years ago, they never mentioned cutting it. And I just got a copy of their bar bible, and it is a 1/2 oz Maraschino and no simple syrup. I've made it at work plenty with 1/2 oz Maraschino and it tastes just like I remember it.

bza commented on 5/20/2024:

Yeah my friend got the recipe for this in the 00s directly from Tommy and there was no simple, it's definitely .5 maraschino.

  • Made with homemade coffee liqueur. Consider using less than 1/4 oz so as not to overpower the drink.
  • Made with La Garrocha and Kahlua. Fascinating tingly taste. Like a more interesting old fashioned.

My coffee liqueur is from House Spirits, and I used a lemon twist since that is what I had. I like how the sherry comes through, and it pairs really well with the coffee and spicy herbal flavors from the other ingredients.

  • Followed 1 oz gin 1/2 Suze. Balanced.
  • Made with mezcal. 3.5 stars if I could
  • Increased gin to 1 oz, reduced Suze to 0.5 oz, added salt to coupe rim, garnish with lavender sprig. — ★★★★
  • Not bad; nice flavor change
  • Made with Amère Sauvage (reduced to 1/2oz with gin boosted to 1oz). Even so reduced, the bitter woodiness was hardcore.
  • It's hard to not read this next to the Last Word: Suze is more bitter, but less complex and herbal, than Chartreuse. The lemon is also simpler than lime. The result is that the maraschino comes through too forcefully IMHO.
  • Excellent, though I think it works best with a little more gin and a bit less Suze.
  • I wanted to just use of the last drops of Suze we had, so went with 1 of everything except 3/4 on the Maraschino, and that made for the perfect balance.

  • Tastes like an amped up grapefruit juice. Easy to drink. Still OK w/more bouton. This is a great cocktail.
  • too juice forward - maybe double the bourbon and aperol — ★★★
  • Crisp, refreshing, reminds me a little of a Paper Plane. Pushed the bourbon to 1.5. Tempted to add some allspice dram or festive bitters if this is supposed to really be Christmasy.
  • Really Tasty. Great for a refreshing cocktail
  • Made with Elijah Craig and red grapefruit juice. Grapefruit and Aperol team up to lend just the right amount of bitterness.
  • Was very good with grapefruit soda instead of juice, and slightly more bourbon.
  • Excellent. Quite accessible, despite a touch of Aperol bitterness and the bourbon base. Refreshing enough for summer; festive enough for Christmas. — ★★★★★

I enjoyed the cocktail much more after halving the Aperol. Really brought out the citrus flavor.
