  • Great, interesting, easy drink! Funky with a light sweetness.
  • Unique bitter herbal balance, but a bit too sweet for me. I added 3/4 oz. squeezed pink grapefruit and that worked well for me.
  • Challenging! Brilliant! Maybe a little sweet.

This is a very good unusual combination, just like aquavit/campari/maraschino/peychauds.

  • Completely decadent! Use super fresh blackberries for more taste. I'd personally skip double straining because I like the texture.

  • Barely a cocktail in the sense of Pink Gin. If you use good gin, and if you like gin, this one is great.

For gin lovers, the Napoleon is a complex and boozy drink worth making. But it's not an easy drink to make because it's difficult to measure 2 dashes. For the Fernet Branca (FB) I rinsed the Old Fashioned glass but left a very small puddle in the glass. For the others, I poured a VERY small amount in the cap and then to the mixing glass. Next time I will use a dropper for consistency and ease of adjusting the amount. But the FB dash should be less because it can easily overwhelm other ingredients. Because it is difficult to precisely measure two dashes, the resulting taste is likely to vary from batch to batch. Sometimes a diamond, sometimes a stone. Good luck!
I rated my effort as 4.0--this time.

famico commented on 6/24/2013:

Didn't have the lemon liqueur, so I tried it like this:

1.5oz Citadelle gin (very lemony gin!)
0.5oz cointreau (well, it's a citrus liqueur)
0.5oz Campari
0.5oz lemon juice
0.25oz simple syrup
thyme

I realise it's now a jasmine with different proportions and thyme added, but it's still nice. Thanks for the inspiration!

Liked.
Did Woodford Reserve and Amaro Averna. I might reduce the simple sugar a bit next time. The Averna is on the sweet side already.
