Ovid's First Century Myth

1 1⁄2 oz Gin (Russell Henry Hawaiian White Ginger)
1⁄2 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Barolo Chinato
1⁄4 oz Orange chocolate liqueur, Distillerie de Biercée Orangine
2 ds Bitters (Five Watt Coriander Bitters)
Instructions

Stir, strain into a chilled spirit glass, and garnish with an orange twist

Notes

*the Russell Henry Hawaiian white ginger gin is atypically sweet and bold in its Botanical profile, obviously with the ginger. I'm not sure of other applicable substitutes (possibly the vernal gin from Letherbee or Portobello Road).

**The coriander bitters from Five Watt are very true to name: bright, light and slightly tropical

History

The long of it... I was intending on making an Adonis cocktail and saw the Cocchi Barolo in the pantry and it sent me on a wildly different path. There are some elements of the Adonis here, but there are elements of others like the Negroni and even to some degree the Martinez

  • 2:1 Rum to other ingredients
  • Made with 3yo Havana Club. A good slightly herbal daiquiri-esque tiki drink. IBA suggests it should be 1oz rum and ½oz everything else although I think it's likely better with more rum (at least 1½ and maybe even 2oz).

mako commented on 11/02/2019:

The IBA suggests the proportion is 2:1 Rum:Others rather than 3:1 in this cocktail. Other recipes I've found suggest that it's 2oz rum instead of 1½. I don't see a lot of support for the garnish either although some sort of fruit wedge/slice seems is not unusual.

Craig E commented on 11/02/2019:

The increase in rum is acknowledged in the Notes. I've curated to add a link to the IBA recipe and to tag this as an altered recipe.

  • A little more bourbon is more balanced.. 2/.75/.75
  • Very nice. I liked it better with Buffalo Trace than with Elijah Craig. — ★★★★
  • A very good Boulevardier variant. Complex, herby, delicious
  • No Suze, so I used Strega (I know, but they're both yellow, right?) and added cherry bitters. I'll try again with some Suze and update. Maybe then a 5?
  • Very nice - gentian comes through nicely with a vermouthy/bourbony backbone.

Pangolindo commented on 3/07/2019:

I made many times the Colevardier,  and will do again. Very nice mix.

I tried  tonight 1.5 oz mellow corn, 0.5 Suze, 0.5 Monténégro, 1 dash orange bitter. Strangely i think it tasted mostly Corn whisky. Like if Monténégro emphasized corn whisky taste and added Just a bit of Spice with slight bitterness from Suze.

More in a gentiane bittered old fashioned  way?

applejack commented on 1/22/2020:

Solid Bully variation, I like the Suze + dark amaro combination.  Also tried with Abano, probably prefer that to the Ramazzotti.  Then again I like Abano over most amari.

And Elijah Craig went NAS back in 2016 (supposedly a blend of 8-12 year whiskies now), so it hasn't carried a 12 year age statement for awhile.  There are a variety of retailer 11 year single barrel bottlings however.

ictman commented on 5/03/2021:

This is an okay cocktail. I love Boulevardiers, Amaro, Bourbon and really love Suze. Yet this is lacking something, not quite sure what.I didn't hate ti but probably won't make it again.

  • Very good, nicely balanced.
  • One of those cocktails where the individual components can't really be picked out. Phenomenal.
  • Delicious drink! Well balanced. I want to try swapping rum for mezcal next time to see how the smokiness mixes with the sweet maple. Later made with mezcal, good, about the same actually. Used aromatic autumn bonfire.

  • Strong and bitter, but very drinkable.
  • Brilliant recipe, greatly balanced. Used Cinzano 1757 instead of Carpano but otherwise strictly followed recipe. Size and bitterness feel really manly, we are in Bushwick or Vieux Carré territory. Totally love it!
  • Sub Amaro Florio for Amer, Amaro di Angostura for Cynar, and Rum Fire (scant) for Jamaican — ★★★★
  • Very smooth and balanced. Only reason I might not make it often is that I seldom have all the ingredients. If you halve this recipe, each of the 1/3 ounce ingredients becomes a 1-teaspoon addition.
  • Very nice! Used Old Overholt rye and cynar 70 proof. Subbed Cointreau for Grand Marnier; also subbed Amaro Nonino for Amer Picon.
  • Well balanced with identifiable parts creating a satisfying whole. Use 1/2 oz dry curaçao instead of Grand Marnier, Carpano Formula Antica instead of Punt E Mes, and Appleton Estates instead of Smith & Cross. — ★★★★★
  • Nice. I like the way the bitter ingredients play off the hogo flavor in the S&C.

Is that supposed to be two *dashes* Angostura bitters?

Dan commented on 3/08/2018:

This drink is pretty big and seems a touch over-the-top complex. I simplified the concept and tried:

1 1/2 oz rye, 1/2 oz each Smith & Cross, Punt e Mes, and Amer Boudreau. I liked it a lot.

Pangolindo commented on 3/11/2018:

I do agree, but all the ingredients works very well together.
Did you try the complete recipe ?

Pangolindo commented on 6/09/2018:

Tried today: 1,5 oz Rye + 0,5 Smith & cross + 3/4 punt & mes + 1/3 Cynar + 1/3 Picon + 1 dash Cinnamon syrup

The syrup soften angles

HallA commented on 12/05/2024:

This is .. "A DRINK." It's definitely not unpleasant but I suspect would benefit from some addition by subtraction. Probably a tidge less S&C and I'm not sure the blend of amaro adds much vs may be able to use a spoonful of one and that would simplify shrinking this thing down to a more regular volume..
