Great drink - the orgeat gives it a creamy, smooth feel and taste. Pretty drink and only lightly sweet which was great (I used apricot brandy though rather than liqueur).

  • Used Italian vermouth Contratto bianco. Nice. Also Evan Williams small batch Bourbon.. Orange peel expressed and dropped in. Well balanced. 4.5 stars
  • Quite fine stirred drink, though the volume is more than fits my regular coupes.

Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a rocks glass with ice, and garnish with an orange twist.

History

In thinking about the combination of apricot and Campari for a drink of the day at Loyal Nine, I selected whiskey as the base spirit, and the idea of crossing a Slope with a Boulevardier came to me.

  • Used 1.25 oz Evan Williams single barrel bourbon, 1 dash Bitter Truth aromatic bitters, otherwise same. Nice interplay between sweet and bitter. Rate 4.5 if I could.
  • Might try the dried out version mentioned in comments, but to spec the sweetness though foregrounded did not wear on me. Rewarding second level of complexity past the bittersweet. — ★★★★
  • Use 50/50 Punt e Mes and dry vermouth — ★★★★★

Dan commented on 3/02/2021:

Really excellent. With Rothman and Winter, it was a touch sweet. Some dry vermouth yielded a warm, balanced and still rich cocktail. Defintely would make again.

Reduced Punt e Mes to 0.75 oz the second time around. Worked a bit better.

Rob Royal

2 oz Japanese Whisky
3⁄4 oz Sloe gin, Plymouth
3⁄4 oz Fernet (Gagliardo)
Instructions

Stir, strain, coupe.

Notes

The drink taste like a Rob Roy (whisky+ vermouth).

History

I've tried many times to replace vermouth in different cocktails.
Apple juice, then sloe gin.
Sloe gin when mixed with an amaro or a fruity liqueur tends to mimic what a sweet vermouth tastes like.
Almost, this is the case with Plymouth sloe gin.

Vermouth is wood, fruity notes, wine notes, slight bitterness.

The sloe brings the astringency from the wine and wood.
