  • Rhum needs to be high proof. Improves with 1/4 oz. lime juice. Overall MUCH better than the Undead Gentleman.
  • Maybe my grapefruit just didn’t have enough acidity, but this one fell flat for me.

Killing Word

1 oz Ancho Reyes Verde chile liqueur
3⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
1 sli Lime (garnish)
Instructions

Shake all ingredients with ice for 15 seconds, strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Notes

Existential question--can something be a Last Word riff if it's not equal parts? Can't answer that one, but these ratios work better than equal parts.

History

Been experimenting with using Ancho Reyes (both variants) as a base spirit

Meh, "equal parts" cocktails are rarely best with actually-equal parts, IMO. e.g.: the best Last Word and Negroni recipes I've ever tried aren't equal parts.

Deliciousness always beats purity, and this one is delicious!

Proportions just right! I personally would lessen the Luxardo just because I like it less sweet.

  • Made with homemade cordial that was probably too light on the elderflower. The result mostly tasted like tart Champagne. Solid, but nothing special. I guess this would be at least a 4 made with a more elderflower-y cordial.

Some background history is here. Elderflower cordial is quite different than liqueur but has historically been widely available in the UK. It's also apparently available in Ikea.

If your area has access to the wines of Selbach-Oster, Skurnik also imports the Nikolaihof lineup which includes a stunning elderflower cordial. Thanks,  Zachary

1 1⁄2 oz Aperitivo Nonino
3⁄4 oz Gin
3⁄4 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano
3⁄4 oz Lime juice
1 ds Absinthe
Instructions

Shake, strain, up.

Notes

A note on L’Aperitivo Nonino—it’s a newer product, distinct from their Amaro. It’s a citrus-forward, very lightly bitter aperitivo at 21% ABV.

Used Fords Officers' Reserve gin, as I thought it might slot nicely between the honeyed vanilla & oak notes of Nonino and Cocchi's spiced fruit and citrus. Drink did not disappoint! Well balanced acid and bitterness; citrus, anise, and a surprisingly vibrant rose on the nose; dried apricot, candied orange, oak, baking spices to taste.

Ken from California commented on 7/13/2022:

I didn't have any Cocchi Americano, so I substituted St. Germain Elderflower liqueur and served it over ice.

Made for a sweet, yet delightful, herbal-infused drink.
