CH Amaro is a amaro distributed primarily in Chicago; substitute with a split of Cynar 70 and Meletti if unavailable. Old Grand-dad 100 is a respectable (and slightly more cost effective) option for the McKenna.
Named after the historic Walnut Room in Chicago's State Street Marshall Field's (I refuse to call it Macy's).
Stir, strain, up, twist.
Shake all ingredients, strain into a chilled coupe.
Entry submittal for Suze cocktail contest. Obviously inspired by the Paper Plane, one of my early cocktail crushes after having my first at The Violet Hour in 2008. Couldn't quite pull off the great balance of the original using just 4 equal parts of these ingredients, so I had to cheat and add a bit more sweetener. Named after the John Cougar Mellencamp 80's song "Paper in Fire"
I’ve been thinking about and working on iterations of this drink for months. It might be better with a 1/4 oz of mezcal instead of honey syrup? The smokey aspect of the mezcal seems to balance the bitter aspect of the Suze much better.
Stir, strain, garnish.
An unusual cocktail in that it is fairly dry -- rather like an intense Martini. Quite slow drinking and contemplative. The Chartreuse dominated the Cynar, but then I prefer the latter to the former.
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint. Add the other ingredients, shake with ice, and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a mint leaf.
Death & Co's version uses lime juice and adds a dash of Angostura.
