History

I was mentally riffing on the Blood & Sand and the cherry ended up as more of a gesture.

  • Also works with 0.25 oz of Cointreau subbing in for the orange juice.

This turned out better than I expected, 3.5 out of 5. There is something here, although it is sweeter than I would like and holds it back. This was my first foray with Licor 43, and it is sweeter and less herbal than I anticipated, even the vanilla is muted although it comes through here. I wonder if Galliano might work better and add another dimension to the flavor? I didn't have Johnnie Walker, so I used Famous Grouse Scotch blended with 1/4 oz Islay to give the former some peat. The Smith & Cross rum is flavorful, but quite rich here. Appleton might be worth a try to reduce the overall sweetness. I was using a very small, perfectly-ripe, fresh-squeezed orange, so a bit of zest oil was helping.

  • Awesome flavors. Passion, vanilla and lime. Lime zest sends it over the top. We used Mango Bubbly soda and it was perfect.
  • Green lime zest against the pink drink was lovely. But the drink was not particularly special. — ★★★

O Negative

1 oz Rye
3⁄4 oz Simple syrup
1 ds Absinthe
1 twst Orange peel (as garnish)
Instructions

Stir, strain, big rock, twist.

Notes

Adjust the amount of simple to your liking, but I find that a good amount helps control the astringency of the bitters while allowing the bitterness and deep spice notes to come through.

Bourbon: What it is ... and isn't

This is the third in a series on Bourbon by Zach Pearson. Read them all: Bourbon, Bourbon After the Act, Bourbon: What it is ... and isn't, Making Bourbon, Who Makes My Bourbon, Producer Capsules., Finding the Good Stuff, Tasting the Good Stuff, Neat, Mashbills, Geeky Information and Resources.

Defining bourbon is complicated. It’s easiest to quote the relevant laws then talk about them, so let’s go to the official record, the Federal Standards of Identity for Whiskey, CFR 27 5.22 (b). Skip down if you don't care to wade through the laws.

(b) Class 2; whiskey. “Whiskey” is an alcoholic distillate from a fermented mash of grain produced at less than 190° proof in such manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to whiskey, stored in oak containers (except that corn whiskey need not be so stored), and bottled at not less than 80° proof, and also includes mixtures of such distillates for which no specific standards of identity are prescribed.

Munsell Test

1 oz PInk grapefruit juice
1 oz Gin, Broker's
3⁄4 oz Batavia Arrack
1⁄2 oz Cinnamon syrup
1⁄4 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano
Instructions

Stir and strain. Garnish with a strip of grapefruit zest (bartender's choice).

Notes

I used Letherbee Autumnal gin, but it's a bit rare, so Broker's is a good choice. If neither, you want very dry and more spicy than juniper-y.
