  • Other recipes suggest: use a dash of orange bitters; up the scotch to 2oz & keep rest of the measures the same

Curated this: Added source citation and creator information. Brought drink in line with the cited link - 1.5 oz Black Grouse instead of 2, no orange bitters), added grapefruit twist as garnish. Thanks,  Zachary

2 oz Rye
1⁄2 oz Campari
1⁄4 oz Crème de Cacao
1 twst Orange peel (as garnish)
Instructions

Stir, Strain, Up, Coupe, Orange Twist

Notes

This recipe was originally recommended for high proof rye. But, I feel lower proof actually makes a nice drink as well. I like Fee Brothers Orange Bitters in this.

  • Nice hanmatten/fash olden spin. The cacao adds a yummy finish.
  • Smooth, easy drinking boulevardier-style drink. Used Bulleit Rye, Tempus Fugit Cacao, Regan's Orange.
  • Not bad, but not much more than the sum of its parts.

Miss Scarlet

1 1⁄2 oz Gin
1⁄2 oz Lime juice
1⁄4 oz Cynar
3⁄4 oz Grenadine
Instructions

Shake, Double Strain, Up, Coupe

Notes

Use homemade Grenadine. Don't even bother if all you have is fake stuff. Grenadine is pretty easy to make!

  • somehow adds up to much more than the sum of its parts. nice tart but sweet and accessible sipper
  • 1/4 oz of Grenadine
  • Made with Beefeater and lemon. Found the Gin maybe a touch too strong for the drink. Will try Aviation Gin instead on the next go!
  • Tart, cranberry-ish. The Cynar is ingenious here. 2nd time, with 1/2 oz cherry grenadine. Still cranberry-ish. — ★★★★
  • Did it with Rose's and then with homemade grenadine. 4 with the cheap stuff, 4.5 with the real stuff. The Cynar makes this drink.

  • Poinsettia Punch (JMW's) — Gin, Chambord, Allspice Dram, Bitters, Cherry Bark Vanilla Bitters, Cardamom bitters, Lemon juice, Cinnamon syrup, Lemon peel

Love love love this!!! Subbed cardamaro for cynar and lemon for lime (all we had), homemade grenadine (made with a touch of orange and rose water), cherry bitters, definitely putting this one in rotation!

Tasty but a little on the sweet side. Will try reducing the grenadine a bit next time.

  • Can also substitute Brandy (Korbel) for the Cognac I may also try reducing the Orgeat a tad as others have commented.
  • This is very good, perhaps a bit sweet. Will decrease orgeat to .75 probably on next one. Peychauds does some nice work here. UPDATE: .75 Orgeat is perfect! — ★★★★★

  • kind of shocking how well spanish brandy works with the other ingredients; my only complaint is it's such easy drinking that the whole thing basically tastes like a complex vermouth

Great painting.  Great drink.  So what are we gonna do when the Abbott's runs out.?

<br />
It's dun run out. So what bitters can be used in place of Abbotts?

I had no spanish Brandy on hand, and tried with Cognac.

I confirm what Mahastew already specified: Does not work with Cognac.  Too sweet. You are warned...

This is an excellent, well-balanced cocktail. Lots of flavor, but not overwhelming, a successful Spanish brandy riff on the Boulevardier. As per the recipe I used Cardenal Mendoza, Gran Classico, Punt e Mes, and my own bottling of Abbott's Bitters based on Darcy O'Neil's painstakingly researched resurrection of the original. All components work together in this cocktail, with the fennel/anise of the Abbott's being noticeable in the aroma. [In response to the question about bitters, try Darcy's recipe for the Abbotts, it is really good and different.]

La Parie

1 1⁄2 oz Gin, Tanqueray
1 oz Aromatized wine, Lillet Blanc
1 twst Lemon peel
Instructions

Stir with ice until well chilled and strain into a very cold glass

Notes

A twist on the Martini adding Maraschino sweetens but also gives a 2:1 Martini an interesting flavour. You can go to 0.5oz of the Maraschino but personally I find that a little too sweet

History

Made this one up in France, where Lillet is cheap and plentiful! There must be a recipe using these ingredients out there but I am yet to find it!
