Burning House of Love

1 oz Rhum Agricole
3⁄4 oz Islay Scotch
1⁄2 oz CioCiaro
1⁄2 oz Aromatized wine, Lillet Blanc
1⁄4 oz Lemon juice
1⁄4 oz Simple syrup
6 dr Rose water
Instructions

Stir with ice, coupé glass, skewer a lemon peel together with a rose petal for the garnish.

Notes

Some people like rose flavor, others don't. 6 drops is a middle ground. If they like more, go to 8; if they like less, try 4.

  • Doesn't taste very balanced; the Islay Scotch dominates, and I therefore question the need for all of these ingredients. I used an aged Agricole and subbed Kina L'Aero for the LIllet.

1 oz Tequila

Muddle the Chicory in a shaker, add the rest of the ingredients and ice and shake and serve.

3⁄4 oz Bitters, Angostura

Instructions

Stir, strain over one big cube, garnish.

Notes

The original version calls for equal parts, but a little extra sweet vermouth tames the spiciness of the bitters (per Serious Eats; see link).

  • The sherry comes through. I always think I should like sherry, but I rarely do. I used Lustau Manzanilla and Ford’s gin. Paired well with a cheese plate. This one is for patio afternoons and charcuterie boards.
  • Enjoyed it because I like Cynar, but while the amaro steals the show, the sherry gets a bit lost. 3.5 stars. — ★★★

Crack the Skye

1 1⁄2 oz Islands Scotch, Talisker (Storm or 10 Year)
1⁄2 oz Cynar 70
1⁄2 oz Amargo-Vallet
1⁄2 oz Sweet vermouth, Carpano Punt e Mes
1 ds Bitters, Scrappy's Chocolate
1 twst Orange peel
Instructions

Stir, strain into an old fashioned glass with a large cube/sphere. Garnish with an orange peel, expressed.

Notes

Can also be made with standard Cynar, and/or a smokey mezcal in place of the scotch (Sombra, Montelobos, etc.)

History

Name derived from Talisker (originating from the Isle of Skye) and the seminal metal album "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon
