Afterburner

1 oz Gin
1 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano
2⁄3 oz Lemon juice
2⁄3 oz Simple syrup
1 oz Vinegar (Pepper-infused, see note)
1 oz Seltzer water (Top)
Instructions

Build over ice in a tall glass with ice; top with seltzer.

Notes

For pepper vinegar, steep 1/8 c. crushed red pepper flakes in 1/4 c. vinegar for an hour; strain. I imagine Bittermans Hellfire Shrub would fit the bill too.

Jägerita

Instructions

Shake; strain; up.

Notes

Jeffrey Morgenthaler promises it "tastes way better than it sounds."

Punchdrink.com also suggests a frozen version, with 3/4 oz. regular simple, blended with ice, and garnished with a lime wheel.

  • 2/1/23: Made with PF curaçao and 1 tsp 2:1 simple. I've tried it with 0, 1, and 2 tsp 2:1 simple, and I think 1 tsp is the best. This is very tasty.
  • Works with a range of amari (made w/ Lucano and Ferro Kina). It's much better w/ blended (6oz ice) and w/ 0.5-0.75oz 1:1 simple. — ★★★★★
  • Sweet and tasty. I don't think it hits the "cloying" register, but if you worry about that, scaling back or eliminating the syrup might be worth trying. — ★★★★★

Hard to believe this could need the simple. It doesn't actually sound bad. Just because Jägermeister is a frat-house staple, doesn't mean that it doesn't have a long history as bitters.

Wondered what I would do with new bottle of Hong-Kong Baigiu. Took a Jagarita recipe & sub'd out the Jagermeister for Baijiu.
2 oz Baijiu (Hong-Kong)
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz Lime Juice
1/4 oz Simple (To taste)
Shake w/ice & Strain
Garnish with a picture of Xi Jinping

It's pretty good, but I was not wowed in the way Morgenthaler was as reported on Punchdrink. I tried again swapping the simple for Barenjager for a German inspired honey flavor and that kicked it up a notch. I may add it to the menu!

Dan commented on 3/17/2015:

Very sweet as written. I added another part of dry vermouth, but even then it was too sweet. I would like to try this again as perhaps 2 oz spirit and a total of 1 oz sweet.

bitterhole commented on 12/28/2015:

I tweaked this by using a little less than 1/4 oz of green chartreuse in place of the yellow chartreuse and enjoyed the heck out of this drink. It's definitely for those who love bitter drinks with a whisper of smoke and herbs.

MOJO1229 commented on 6/13/2016:

This is the ideal cocktail for those who like a sweet but not too sweet drink, and those who like a chocolate-like taste. I suspect that's about 80% of adult Americans. I used Amer Picon and one of my favorite top-shelf Italian vermouths, Contratto Rosso. This is a drink that deserves a top-shelf vermouth, whatever that brand may be. And it's definitely an after-dinner drink, one to be lingered over and enjoyed. Simple to make, and easy to enjoy!
