This is sort of a Mediterranean tiki drink. The flavor combination is sensational, but it's a little sweeter than I was hoping. Next time I'm going to try it without the simple syrup. Thanks for a delicious drink!

Ransom Negroni

Instructions

Stir, strain, up, twist.

Notes

Name aside, this struck me as sufficiently different from a Negroni to merit its own entry.

  • Gran Classico hell yeah
  • Even sweeter than a normal Negro. Also doesn't feel *that* different than just a Negroni. The Gran Classico is a great sub for Campari but make this with London Dry.
  • Made over ice, rocks glass, bitter, sweet, spicy... Makes an outstanding fancy negroni variation — ★★★★★
  • a new favorite. Replaced Gran Classico with Avion d'Or, from the same producer

Verrrrrry interesting. Made with La Gritona tequila, Cocchi's Dopo Teatro, Amer dit Picon from Golden Moon, and homemade creme de cacao. Part of me thinks it's missing something....I almost want it to be a *bit* sweeter, which makes sense. The folks at Golden Moon told me they modeled their Amer after the original Amer Picon and is much less sweet than the current version. Either way, it's already very good.

I'm taking a part to mean an ounce, making this drink the same size as Audrey Saunders' Goodnight, Irene, which this drink riffs on.

Tasty, a drink that grows on you. The first sip is reminiscent of toothpaste, then the flavors begin to blend. It’s not a drink for everyone, though.

Doctor Cocktail

Instructions

Shake, strain, up

Notes

The recipe is equal parts Punsch and Bacardi rum, with a teaspoon each lemon and orange juice. I've taken this to mean 1 oz of each.

History

In his 1947 Bartender's Guide, "Trader" Vic Bergeron suggests 1.5 Punsch, .75 Jamaican rum, and 1 tsp each orange and lemon.

Half Windsor

3⁄4 oz Aromatized wine, Cocchi Americano
3⁄4 oz Aperol
1⁄2 oz Lemon juice
1⁄4 oz Mint syrup (mint tea syrup)
1 oz Soda water (or sparkling wine)
1 twst Grapefruit peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Shake, strain over ice and soda or sparkling wine, and, optionally, seasonal fruit and herbs (as an in-glass garnish). Garnish with a long thin strip of grapefruit peel tied as best you can manage into a tie—half windsor for extra credit. Serve with straw.

Notes

Mint tea syrup: make a 1:1 syrup of white sugar and regular strength Moroccan mint tea, and then steep a sprig's worth of mint leaves for 20 minutes and strain.

History

Sort of a Pimm's Cup crossed with a mint Arnold Palmer. Sip those last few drops of summer.

  • This one rocks! Used homemade mint syrup and Prosecco. Yum! — ★★★★★
  • Like a nice herbal iced tea with a bit of a kick. Kinda low ABV, and I'm not a fan of Pimm's, but this gives me a reason to keep some around.

Cowboy Coffee

2 1⁄2 oz Whiskey, Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey
1⁄2 oz Demerara syrup (1:1)
2 Coffee bean (dark roast)
1 twst Lemon peel (as garnish)
Instructions

Crush coffee beans and shake with other ingredients. Fine strain into a Champagne flute. Express peel and garnish with twist and a third coffee bean.

Notes

Stranahan's has a sui generis profile, being distilled purely from malted barley (like single malt Scotch) and then aged in charred new oak barrels for two years (like bourbon). The closest approximation might be a Scotch aged in "virgin" (new) oak, of which there are a couple; otherwise a bourbon or rye would be closer in character than a standard ex-bourbon barrel Scotch or Irish.
