Lost Word

3⁄4 oz Gin
3⁄4 oz Kummel
3⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Yellow Chartreuse
3⁄4 oz Lemon juice
Instructions

Shake hard, strain, adorn with "fancy slashed lemon zest."

Notes

I was recounting a dream in which every time I tried to make a Last Word my bottle of Green Chartreuse slipped my grasp and taunted me, as one does, and I slipped up and typed Lost Word instead. Rufus ran with it.

If you're looking for a man's drink, the Italian Rivalry (aka Monte Old-Fashioned), look no farther. With its robust flavor from the bourbon (Jim Beam black label), and the exquisite taste of a good cognac (Hennessy Very Special Cognac), combined with light brown sugar to add some sweetness (but not too much), with the zest oils from an orange and a lemon to counterbalance the flavors. NOTE: One level tsp of sugar equals one sugar cube.

As you might guess, this drink is complex with its many different flavors. I think you'll enjoy both the breadth and depth of flavors you'll encounter in this drink.

The only decision you'll have to make is whether you want to use light or dark brown sugar. For myself, I was satisfied with light brown sugar (which was the only brown sugar I had). The dark brown sugar is likely to be somewhat sweeter and richer. However, be you woman or man, you'll enjoy this "man's drink."

Deeply Sherry containing, nice evolution, sherry nutty / raisin-ey notes throughout. That's usually a three for me, individual mileage may vary.

  • A bit sweet, but I had to make my own lighter spiced rum with 4-1-1 Barbancourt 8, velvet falernum and allspice dram.
  • This tastes *so* much like a berry-flavored Orange Julius. It's great!

Curated this a bit: removed "fresh squeezed" from the OJ. Changed "Kraken Spiced Rum" to "Kraken", which is a brand of spiced rum. Removed extraneous note that was causing line breakage, clarified the twist as garnish.

Thanks,

Zachary

Instructions

Notes

A bittered Pompadour playing off Bonal's similarity to Pineau des Charentes and affinity for Jamaican rum, named for a Bette Davis film where she sports that hairstyle. Sort of a Patois crossed with a Mai Tai as well.

Meh...sorry to be a downer but this didn't work for me.  I used Depaz rhum agricole, Appleton 12, Bonal, and Bitterman's Xocolatl Mole and it just felt like a bad mix.  Maybe a different run would have helped - perhaps something stronger like Smith & Cross.  IN the end it just seemed like a good idea, with some ingredients I love that nonetheless came across as somehow being "off."  Certainly not undrinkable, but not something I'd make again, or recommend.
