Romancing the Stone

1 oz Scotch
3⁄4 oz Cardamaro
3⁄4 oz Amaro, Cappelletti Sfumato Rabarbaro (Sfumato or Zucca)
1⁄2 oz Herbal liqueur, Green Chartreuse
1 twst Grapefruit peel (As garnish)
Instructions

Stir with ice, strain into a rocks glass with ice, and garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Notes

Mellows nicely with ice melt.

History

In scanning my liquor shelves, I conjured up an Scotch abstraction of the Bijou taken in the Caustic Negroni direction. Since Scotch goes well with amari like Sfumato in the Preceptor and Cardamaro in the Great King Street, Green Chartreuse and orange bitters would round out the combination nicely. Moreover, Bijou means jewel, so I dubbed this one the Romancing the Stone after the 1984 romantic adventure comedy.

Shawn C commented on 12/12/2022:

Clever combination and with thoughtful proportions. I wasn't sure if I would like this, since Green Chartreuse is often a bully in classic cocktails; but the Sfumato, Cardamaro, and Scotch are intense enough on their own to tame the strong herbal Chartreuse. Even the Angostura Orange Bitters (from the original post) were a good match for the other components. Of course Sfumato and Cardamaro are intense, so this is something one should be in the state of mind for.

Lady Sansa

1⁄2 oz Honey
Instructions

Muddle blueberries before adding other ingredients. Shake. Strain and pour into a sour goblet.

Notes

Stick to contemporary gins with this one. Avoid London dry. Plymouth, St. George Botanivore, and Barr Hill all gave me great results. Barr Hill seems to have yielded the best results.

The result is an aromatic wonderland of a punch.

Growing Envy #2

2 oz Rhum Agricole (HSE Black sheriff)
1⁄2 oz Amer Picon
1⁄4 oz Crème de Banane (Merlet)
1⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Chartreuse (MOF)
Instructions

Stir quick with ice, strain in rock glass, with huge ice cube.

Notes

Substitue charteuse MOF for yellow charteuse or green.

Black sheriff is an agricole rum aged in Kentucky whisky cask. Very very strong oak, and bourbony.
It's dry and bitter with heavy bourbon after aroma.
Despite, It really mixes easily in about anything!

You can add 1/3 oz Maurin Quina to lower intensity and proof.

  • Made with a split of Mt Gay Black Barrel and Barbancourt 8, Amer Boudreau, and Green Chartreuse (and crappy CdB). Interesting flavors including ground cinnamon, sweet cream. ETA: tried with split of San Zanj and Appleton 12, w/ Boudreau and TF Banane. Sweet and intense.

  • Prefer less maple than recommended. Swapping Amaro Nonino for Montenegro is definitely a better choice
  • Negroni variant
  • Really nice Negroni riff! — ★★★★
  • I ran across Piers Knight's "Amaro Paisano" but lacked the coke to make it (imagine that!) so I decided to try the original that it was based on and decided it was worthy of including here.
