  • I served this up. Very nice although the Domaine de Canton is mostly overwhelmed by the strawberry rest of the drink. Almost too drinkable. Might try again with a milder rum.

I don't think there's anyway this one would work with Ginger Ale subbed fro the Domaine de Canton. They just aren't substitutes.

Notes

Marie Byrd Land is among the most remote and untouched regions of Antarctica, and the largest unclaimed territory in the world. This riff on the Alaska has an icy taste and a ghostly green pallor.

  • Used Benedictine & Elderflower in place of Chartreuse
  • Very interesting and creative. I might experiment with 1/4 less creme de cacao and 1/4 more rye next time

drinkingandthinking commented on 8/08/2018:

I love Last Word experiments and variations, but this one seems to let the Chartreuse dominate and lacks the citrus for balance. Maybe swap out the Cynar for lime? IDK, it was a noble attempt but not what I had hoped for.

Gun For Hire

1⁄2 oz Averna
1⁄4 oz Herbal liqueur, Yellow Chartreuse
Instructions

Combine bourbon, Averna, Chartreuse, and bitters with ice and stir. Rinse glass with Ardbeg and discard. Strain stirred ingredients into glass.

Notes

The Ardbeg can also be added using a few drops from a dropper/dasher on the top of the drink in the glass. The intention is to give a slight smoke aroma without imparting much of the flavour. Be sure to use two heavy dashes of the bitters and a higher proof bourbon to keep the drink dry.

History

Named after the 1942 starring Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. The drink itself is a variation on a Red Hook.

Spicy honey is available commercially as Mike's Hot Honey (no relation to Mike's Hard Lemonade (I think)). Or make your own with your hot pepper of choice.

I think this should be stirred, not shaken.

DrunkLab commented on 7/25/2013:

I haven't read Conigliaro's book, so I'm basing the call to shake, not stir this drink on FrogPrincesse's blog. Based on her photos I'd say she definitely shook hers. While The Wink doesn't contain citrus juice or any other opaque ingredients, it is boozy and full of strong herbal flavors, so I imagine the shaking is Conigliaro's way to make the drink colder/more diluted and thus more palatable to a broader audience. Plus the pink blush from shaking looks cool and suits the name.

Zachary Pearson commented on 7/25/2013:

The drink is indeed shaken - I love Google Books preview function, even if it only gives you a paragraph to go by sometimes.

Thanks,

Zachary

FrogPrincesse commented on 7/26/2013:

Shaken is correct per the book. I did a double take as well as the cocktail does not contain citrus. Shaking gives it a lighter texture which works really well here.

Made with reduced tonic syrup, Cointreau blood orange, orange bitters and grapefruit twist. Delicious.
